The guy driving real slow and stopping on the road all the time with Bubba in the back of the truck with a chambered round or the guy driving at a reasonable speed heading to his next spot? Yes we have all done it at 1 time or another but it's up to the WM and what he sees. we all know its illegal to shoot from a vechile or a maintained road - chasing/pursuing game etc. etc. even the wm guy has to abide by the regulations - show me any item related to how fast or slow you drive down a road while hunting - - which decides if you are a road hunter! !i'd fight any ticket that said i was going slow and looking for game thus -- i'm a road hunter! which is not illegal either - its just a handle we give people whom dont want to get out and hunt,who just drive around and hope to find an easy shot! I know of a time when a guy who was driving downthe seven springs rd - looking out the window was wondering accoss the rd a little sometimes on the left and then on the right - a g&f was approching - stopped and him and gave the guy a ticket for driving down the wrong side of the rd - guy took it to court - judge thru it out - he said i'v e driven that rd and I knowthere are no lines to indicate which is theright or left side besides we all try to avoid the **** washboards. Antlerdog Report post Posted December 12, 2011 I hope that the guys this is written to are not actually members of this forum, but in the event that they are, here goes... So the Sunday after Thanksgiving I was out with a friend who had a tag in 32. I was sitting on a ridge top glassing the canyon while my friend was on the backside of the ridge glassing another canyon. I locate a 95-100 inch 3x4 coues on the opposite side of the canyon near the bottom around 400 yards from me, working his way down into the thick bottom. I radio my buddy and tell him to head my way. He tells me it will take him a few minutes. I loose sight of the buck in the bottom. At the same time I'm glassing the bottom trying to find the buck again, I see a white Dodge Ram coming up a two track in the bottom of the canyon. The truck slides to a stop and a couple of guys jump out of the truck with their rifles. I hear rocks rolling in the bottom of the canyon and I look to see the buck on a dead run headed straight for the saddle I am sitting in. The shooting starts with both idiots standing and shooting off-hand at this running buck which is easily 200 yards from them when they start shooting. They both unload their rifles as fast as they can work the bolts. Buck now closing fast on my position and jackwagon #1 loads a single shell in his rifle and starts to acquire the buck in his scope. I am standing in a tan hoodie and brown ball cap and I start waving my arms like a wild man when I realize that the guy is pointing his rifle my way. The guy takes a shot as the buck is literally less than 20 yards from me passing through the barren saddle and over the top... I yell "Hey!" at the top of my lungs and now both jackwagons are looking up toward me and pointing. I am still waving my arms. Idiots actually raise their rifles after seeing my movement and look at me through their scopes. Once they see it is a person, they immediately lower their rifles down and turn and walk really fast to their truck. The guy actually backs back down the road for around 100 yards and does a 6 point turn and they haul butt out of the canyon. If any of you know two guys (probably early to late 20's) who were hunting 32 and who were in a newer Dodge Ram with black rims and a Cabelas sticker on the center of the top of their rear window, I have a little something for them if you can send them my way! Kevin H, Did you have a tag for this hunt? Or were you buddy hunting, or perhaps a licensed guide? ( maybe your buddy isn't a good enough hunter to fill his own tag? ) Did the people in the Dodge truck have tags for this hunt? Did the guys in the Dodge truck "jackwagons" have backpacks with $5K worth of optics going to a glassing point? Thank god the hunters didn't think you were a flopping deer they had just shot at ( you waving your arms at 400 plus yards in a saddle you say is barren to you ) If you don't like public hunting you should stay home!!!!! I really don't see these guys doing anything terribly wrong other then not checking for blood but then again I wasn't there so maybe it was worse then it sounds. Seems like more wrong place at the wrong time kind of thing. It would be different if after you yelled at the guys they continued shooting knowing you were there but it seems as soon as they knew you were up there they stopped. In my opinion the biggest error I see made in this scenario is you waving your arms yelling instead of ducking for cover but then again I wasn't there. All I know for sure is is good no one got hurt. What I don't understand is why some people bash road hunters as bad as they do. I'm not talking about the guys that drive around with guns loaded ready to shoot from the back of the truck or from inside the vehicle. I'm talking about the guys that drive around looking for game and when they find it they get off the road out of the vehicle and then go after the animal. Really what so wrong with this? Growing up this is how I hunted with my Grandpa because he was just to old to get out and hike. Now days this is how it is with my dad because he too is getting to old to hike. The only way I can get my dad to go out hunting with me is to drive roads. We'll drive to a nice glassing spot get out and glass a bit and if we don't find anything we'll drive to the next glassing spot and so on and so on. While driving from spot to spot we are looking for animals. I just don't see why this type of hunting is frowned on as bad as it is. Once again glad no one was hurt. Guest super jumbo Report post Posted December 12, 2011 I was on the 12A west late hunt this year and i would venture to say that 50 percent of all the hunters there were road hunting. I dont see anything wrong with it, to each his own. Road hunters kill some of the biggest bucks every year. Most people were raised doing some road hunting with their fathers/grandpa's. Some people say road hunting is more of a sport than using 40 cameras to find game, to each his own. Instead of tearing down someones form of hunting, we should support each other, and the form with which they choose to hunt. I love hiking and pounding the back country, and that doesnt make me any better than the guy driving down the road with a cup of coffee and a smoke in his mouth, to each his own. I also hope when i am in my 80's some day and cant even make it across the bar ditch on the side of the road, that i am still hunting from the warmth of a heated seat in the truck. On one end of the spectrum is red, with the longest wavelengths apparent to the human eye; at the other end is violet, with the shortest. However, other light wavelengths exist. Just as human ears can't hear some sounds, human eyes can't see some light. These invisible wavelengths include ultraviolet (beyond violet) and infrared (below red). Deer sense colors toward the violet end of the spectrum, so they can see blues and probably even ultraviolet (UV) light. Deer show a slight sensitivity to yellow, but tests indicate that green, orange, and red appear to them as shades of gray. My Dad use to tell me if you dress like a deer (brown) or a bear (black) prepare to be looked at with a scope or even shot towards or at...I cammo up out in AZ then use orange tape on my pack and my chest and back area attached tightly so they don't blow in the breeze but enough so Hunters see me. This could save my life and save someone from making an error in judgement. I've also heard on this forum that hunting far from roads its a good idea and I totally agree if you can see a road that is near or where you are glassing or hunting prepare for company. willhunt4coues Report post Posted December 12, 2011 From what I was told that if you are driving from point a to b or just driving around and while you are driving you see a deer (like this situation) and jump out and start shooting it is considered road hunting. Now to if that Game warden would have sited them who knows. I know not all game wardens are mean. Our game warden in this unit is a stand up guy. But he still might have sited them. Sorry to hear they look at you through their scopes I would have found a rock or tree and hid behind it till they were gone. You should always be aware of your target and BEYOND. There is NOTHING wrong with driving around till you see an animal and then you park and go AFTER him. But I know it has been said somewhere that if you are just driving at a slow rate of speed looking for game it COULD be considered road hunting. That was said in the regs. I acknowledged some errors on my part which I will not repeat, however I can't believe some of the posts that people put on here... Jim, are you implying that going into the field with your friend without a tag is in some way improper or illegal? I can not believe that you would suggest that if someone takes a buddy into the field with him that he is any less a hunter than someone else who has no friends to go with them... I was not getting paid for my services and did not have any means of taking game, so therefore I was legal... I don't know very many avid hunters, who if given the opportunity to spend a day in the field with a good friend vs. sit at home and watch hunting shows would pass the opportunity... unless that person has no friends that would like to take him with them...
