CouesWhitetail Report post Posted February 27, 2006 You can probably hire some tribal members to help you out. There are usually some cowboys or firefighters up around the Point of Pines camp that could help. But you would be better off prearranging it with someone. Maybe call the Rec and Wildlife Dept and see if they know of anyone or call some of the guides there. No meat processing on the rez that I know of, but there is a guy in globe. I don't have his contact info though.... Amanda

Amanda <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Thanks for the info, I've never hunted big game in AZ just small and at one time as a student with a collection permit.Have hunted in CO & ID.I was informed you're the expert on san carlos wildlife. How large is the elk herd and how difficult is it to locate the elk in the hilltop area?
CouesWhitetail Report post Posted February 27, 2006 You will have to talk to the current wildlife biologist out there to find out the current population estimate. I last surveyed that population in the late 1990's and it was a small but growing herd. I imagine it has grown quite a bit in the last 8 years or so. Since it sounds like you are out of state, you might want to hire a tribal guide to help you get an elk. Hilltop is a large unit. If you have enough time to camp out there before the season starts you might be able to find them yourself. But having a guide should make your trip more successful. Kelney Report post Posted March 1, 2006 I did this hunt a few years back when I was not drawn in AZ and I was having withdrawal symptoms. I went on the dry lake unit. You would think this would be a slam dunk hunt but it was not. I did a little scouting and thought it would be pretty easy. Anyways, If you talk to either the biologist or a ranger they can also give you ideas as well on areas to concentrate on. The locals that I ran into on the rez offered up ideas to go. They were about as productive as my own ideas to hunt but nonetheless they appeared to be helpful. If you had the dry lake unit, I could give you some areas.
