Coues Buck with a Mane?

Recommended Posts

Kinda looks like the neck on the mannequin was a bit smaller the the hide measurement with a very jagged cut up the back of the deer which when they stitched up the back they pinched up the hide caused the effect like a mane

Dale, its not very common. I have mounted 2 in my career. and from what I remember they were both from the same unit. I can't remember what unit. From what I remember they were both later season deer. the first one I thought I did something wrong, I kept grooming and nothing worked. then the light bulb went off and I realized it was a mane or colick. its cool to see those oddities. it is definitely not too small of form. great looking mount

We try to educate our clients to never cut a deer cape up the back of the neck. This buck was caped properly and tubed to the back of the skull, then it was brought in the shop and caped off the head using a "short Y" incision. This results in a mount without a jagged seam up the back of the neck, had this client cut the buck up the back of the neck it would have ruined this unique and rare hair pattern. This buck has an 18 inch neck, mounted. There was no extra skin to bunch up anywhere.

This is indeed a rare condition and taxidermists probably know more about this topic than deer biologists.

I did mention them briefly in my article on other hair/pelage variations (toward the end of the article). Click
