jhedg Report post Posted November 25, 2011 My first Coues hunt this weekend and I have none of it I have been sucsessful the last 20 yrs out east, but I feel as though I will be spinning my wheels in 36a. Been out scouting 4 times, hours, and hours of glassing, not even a glimps of a deer, or much else for that matter, so help a new Couse hunter out with some positive vibes. At least I will be hunting, and not at work
nighthawk Report post Posted November 25, 2011 Find the highest peak.. Glass all the fingers that come down from it. First thing in the morning hit the first spots to get sun on em. Find mountain with good prickly pears and good mixture of trees. You sould be able to find coues there. Also don't disregaurd the mountains with little cover, they will be there too. Glass slow, always on tripod don't waste time trying to hold ur binos . With this latter hunt they might get up a little later , like around 8 even. So glass slow, long and you should find something to look at!! Good luck keep us posted!

At least I will be hunting, and not at work Hello I hunted 36a Nov 4-10 and every time I saw deer. Twice i jumped a bedded whitetail buck in the same pile of rocks around the same time ( Friday and Wednesday).I usually hunt of off Ocotillo Ranch Rd.entrance.Which put me north of the McGee settlement and just south of the power lines on the Navarro ranch.I hunted a little lower than most would like for coues but I've taken two deer from the same area and seen many deer taken from the same general area (2009 and 2011).The roads are easily accesible with little four wheel drive action needed.Like people say, find a high spot and glass or maybe you just have to "hoof it" and bust some draws, canyons and ravines. A buddy of mine hunted of off Arivaca rd. and had no success.I don't know if you are familiar with that entrance but just in case you can take Mission Rd. south to Ocotillo Ranch Rd. and stay on the paved road till it ends. Then make a left on the dirt road and follow it till you see the sign that tells you to access state trust land or gate.Once at the gate I usually go right on the power line service road and find a road that takes you where you want to go cause there are many roads there. Good luck and I hope some people don't get upset about this info cause somebody may see it as "e-scouting". The way I see it is,the more hunters there are the more support we will have to insure we continue to have the Right to Hunt.
wbyfireman Report post Posted November 30, 2011 I have never hunted that unit but one thing that helped me was to SLOOOOOOOOWWWW DOOOOOOOOOWWN when glassing!! (besides having a tripod and good optics) I will spend hours glassing a hillside where I know there is deer and low and behold one will appear right where I looked 4-times prior!! I swear they are sent down from outer space when Im not looking. About every 10-20 min I will mark where I left off and brouse quickly the hillside with binos to see if anything is standing in the open. Then it is back to crunch time. I am finallty glassing up bedded bucks doing this. I pack caffine, coffee or ephedra as it keeps me on my toes and on point, otherwise I swear I could fall asleep with my binos right in front of me!! (thermogenics have been proven to increase confidnece, awareness, and focus...seriously!!) just something to consider. Good luck
