jcarter Report post Posted November 20, 2011 How far do you guys that are using a 3x9x40 scope feel good shooting? I know it depends on the gun, shooter, rest, load and there are a ton of variables . I'm just trying to figure out if I'm in the average shooter range. To be honest I cant seem to get out past 300 yards and keep good groups. I'm shooting an old rifle , centurion p-14 in 7mm Rem Mag, 150g rem factory loads. Does that sound bout right or should I rethink my setup if I want to get farther out? Thanx

elkaholic Report post Posted November 20, 2011 bottom line it depends on the scope - bushnell to leupold big difference in quality of lense even bushnel sportview to elite series a lot depends on the scope itself - as far as quality!

GEMRI Report post Posted December 11, 2021 I also have the P14 Century International Arms Centurion P14 7mm Rem Mag. My Dad gave it to me as a gift years ago. I took it to the range and the groups were all over the place. I took it to a local gun smith to get it looked over. He ended up remounting the scope and rings to make sure everything was right. He also glass bedded the stock and free floated the barrel. Lastly, he installed a Timney trigger. I went back to the range to see what it could do after upgrades. I found out that when I got back to the range, all the time, effort and money was well worth it. It will shoot MOA at 100 yards out. I now have a great hunting rifle for around $250 dollars in upgrades and alignments. I will post pictures soon. Glad to be on the forum.

When I did mine, the accuracy went up 10 fold. Adding a Timney trigger would also make it a top notch shooter. I added pictures of mine to compare.
Hoss50 Report post Posted December 12, 2021 My old 257 weatherby had a 3x9x40 for years. It shot around .75 MOA. I shot it at 500 yards several times. I would have preferred more magnification, but it held sub-MOA at 500. Aim small miss small.
