BML Report post Posted November 20, 2011 My Danners have finally given up on me so I'm in the market for a new boot. I've heard some great things from hikers about these boots. Just curious if anyone has tested them in hunting scenarios. Things like comfort and ankle support are a must for me. http://www.rei.com/product/667406/asolo-fsn-95-gtx-hiking-boots-mens,-light-brown/sand?preferredSku=6674060261?cm_mmc&mr:trackingCode=3683071B-81F9-DE11-BAE3-0019B9C043EB&mr:referralID=NA
yumabowhunter Report post Posted November 20, 2011 I was a Danner man until recently. I couldnt get my Danners to last more than a couple seasons with the rough desert we tend to hunt. I switched this year and went with Mendles. (I know the spelling is wrong) I've been very impressed so far. They take a while to breakin but once they did they have been great. They have been great. Very comfortable and light. You can get them from Sierra Trading Post for $120, sometimes even less. The only thing I wish they is a more aggressive tread. They fit a bit more narrow than other brands which is good for my foot. I also have a pair of Zamberlan's which I used this hunting season to pack with, they were very good and my feet felt great. Mike S Report post Posted November 20, 2011 I have a new pair of Asolo Sasslongs that are my new favorite boots. I used to swear by Danners, but in my opinion they are not nearly what they used to be. I am very tempted to buy another pair of the Asolos when they are on sale just to have on hand when the first pair is through. Mike

Mike S Report post Posted November 20, 2011 +1 on Sierra Trading post. They also have a very easy exchange policy if size isn't correct.
Coach Report post Posted November 21, 2011 Haven't tried them myself but has a buddy that swears by that exact boot. He loves them. My favorite boots so far are the Cabela's/Meindl Perfekt Hunter. I'm guessing the Perfekt hiker would be very good too for a little lighter boot.
catclaw Report post Posted November 21, 2011 Take a look at Kenetrek, a little $ but worth it. I have had/have all the boots listed. The older Meidls were quite good. The new ones are not the same. I guess Cabelas wanted to meet a price point and let Meindl dummy them down. I am specifically talking about the Canandas and Alaskans. The Perfekt hunters are not even the same type of boot. I bought a $300 pair of Danners. A big disappointment. They are wimpy and wore way to quickly. I also got a pair of Kenetreks early this year. They lasted about 4 hunts and the soles came unbonded. If you want real boots, you will have to pony up for the Lowas, Hanwags or Crispis. My next pair will probably be Lowas. I am going to get my Meindl Alaskans resoled and hopefully get another year out of them. I am hard on boots as I hunt rough country a lot buy I expect them to hold up when I buy top-of-the-line boots.

Coach Report post Posted November 21, 2011 Catclaw, what did you mean by "The Perfekt hunters are not even the same type of boot." Not trying to instigate anything jut curious. I've had a lot of boots, usually Italian made Cabelas, and most did very well, and the Perfekt Hunters have been great for me. The next time I drop big money on a pair of boots I'll be looking hard at the Kenetreks, but I can't say in any way that Meindl dummied down the Perfeckt hunters for Cabelas to meet a price point. I'm pretty picky about gear, and one thing I will never skimp on is boots. The Meindl/Cabelas Perfekt Hunter boots are in a very short list of things I've bought for hunting that actually exceeded my expectations. Maybe I read your post wrong, but did you have a bad experience with these boots?
az_shooter Report post Posted December 1, 2011 danners are ok but i've always been a fan of nicks but they are a little pricy compared to danners. but i recently bought a pair of lowa boots and for the price they are well worth it, maybe something to look into
elkster9 Report post Posted December 2, 2011 I love my Kenetreks. I have two pairs of them. They are an absolute wonderful boot to wear. However, like anything else you need to find out what fits YOUR FEET the best and what fits YOUR NEEDS. Amanda FYI, they will be coming out with the womens model you were looking into sometime next year.
BML Report post Posted December 2, 2011 Unfortunately, Kenetreks are not in my budget as I have heard lots of good reviews of their boots. I think I'm going to try to stretch my Danners through the next couple months and then look into the Meindl and FSN boots. Thanks again for all the tips. I appreciate it.
