daryl_s Report post Posted November 14, 2011 So I am going to participate in my first ever road bike race this Saturday in the 42 mile race of the Tour de Tucson. Any other forum members going to participate? I have a friend who is really good and I have done a few mountain bike rides and road bike rides with him. I thought it would be fun to try something new and would also be a good way to help get in shape for the upcoming hunts. With over 10,000 participants, many coming from out of state, I know this is a big deal for Tucson every year.
fatbastard Report post Posted November 15, 2011 My whole family is signed up for fun rides. My wife and #'s 2 and 3 sons are doing three miles, Me and # 1 son are doing 6. I am scrambling to get his first mountain bike together so he doesn't have to do 6 on a bmx race bike. Mountain is all I ride, I even used it hunting a few times, but I couldn't figure the logistics of getting 300 lbs of me and my gear, my rifle, and my buck all out the way I pedaled in. Dads quad to tha rescue. Mountain bikes are a great way to get in far and fast.
NitroAZ Report post Posted November 15, 2011 I'm in for the full 111mi, can't wait! I know a lot of Tucsonans get frustrated with traffic control during this event, but the race is great for the economy and it's a cool opportunity for hardcore cyclists and armatures to ride together. Fat.. I think it's great you have your family involved, your children will really enoy it!!

On my first trip to Zambia, where I shot the lion that appears with my posts, I asked the outfitter about the strange-looking paths that seemed to cut across every dambo (clearing) on his concession. Each path actually was two parallel trails, one about 12 inches wide, the other about three inches wide, and they stayed a consistent 12-14 inches or so apart. He said they were made by poachers walking "bushmeat" out of the bush on their bicycles. The wider paths were made by human feet, the narrow ones were made by bikes loaded with meat from warthogs, zebras and antelopes they had caught in wire snares. fatbastard Report post Posted November 20, 2011 The family had a great time out there today. No complaints from any of the kids. I was not sure how my 8 year old would like 6 miles, he has never ridden that far. The new (to him)bike must have been spot on, he was ready for more!! My two younger sons and wife had a great time too, the day was without incident, weather was perfect, parking downtown was no sweat, the coffee at the finish line was free. The perfect storm for a great family day. daryl_s, I hope you had a good one too. The sprint for the finish in the big race was amazing, they had to be going 30+, just inches apart at the finish line.

The sprint for the finish in the big race was amazing, they had to be going 30+, just inches apart at the finish line. The ride turned out great. Silverbell was BRUTAL. Uphill, headwind, and in some serious need of resurfacing made for a very tough stretch. The ride was a lot of fun and everything seemed to go pretty smooth. And Lance, it sure does create a huge traffic nightmare but at least it does provide a very good economic boost for the city. It was a lot of fun and definitely an event I plan to attend every year. BTW, I noticed someone or maybe even a few people wearing Fatbastard jerseys. Is that a coincidence or was it you? That's really great that you were able to involve your whole family. fatbastard Report post Posted November 21, 2011 You mean there was a team fatbastard?? Those bastards stole my name!! No, it was not me, maybe they have a spot on the team for me next year. I want to do the 40 on a mountain bike next year. I regularly ride 10-15 on trails, occasionally 20. I surprised myself with a decent time on the 10 miler at Tour of The White Mountains last month. 40 on the road should be within grasp with some extra practice this year. Yes, there was a team fatbastard. They had a slogan with something to the effect of "An eating team with a cycling disorder" I thought it was pretty funny. They had some nice jerseys made up. Good luck on the 40 miler with a mountain bike. I saw quite a few mountain bikes out there.

NitroAZ Report post Posted November 22, 2011 With the exception of the one of our teammates going down and breaking his clavical we had a great ride. While climbing up Snyder I passed Barry Bonds, I offered him some words of encouragement, but he I don't think he appreciated it. I guess the dumb@ss is all tapped out on his supply of roids!!
