yumabowhunter Report post Posted November 9, 2011 A couple years ago I made an overnight trip into some backcountry that looked like awesome whitetail country. While in there I glassed up some nice bucks and decided at some point in the future I wanted to do a backpack hunt and hit it hard. Well this was the year. It was me, my dad, nephew and a good friend. We headed in Thursday morning with each of us packing roughly 55 pound packs. Being that we had never done a trip like this before I wasnt sure what to take and what to leave. I didnt want to short us on supplies or food yet I didnt want to kill ourselves and take unnecessary gear. In the end it worked out great and we had plenty to be comfortable. Im now hooked on this type of hunt and will make some small changes next time to what I take. This was us fully loaded down ready to head out. A rogue cow almost ruined our trip when he came charging up the trail going into first canyon. He was ticked! Dad coming up one of the mountains. Home sweet home The country was great. I saw a total of 24 bucks and too many does to count. Derek taking a couple practice shots opening morning at a buck. Friday night it really stormed. The mountains had snow on them Saturday morning. Daily ritual of filling our water bottles. Me holding dads palmated buck. Derek with his first buck. He was pumped! Eating our MREs around the fire at night. Headed out after a good time. hunter4life Report post Posted November 9, 2011 Congratulations, it looks like you guys had a great time. That is the kind of hunting that I usually do, it is fun but a lot of hard work. I like to see the external frame packs in action. They are the only way to comfortably backpack hunt and carry heavy loads. They are FAR superior to an internal frame pack for anything over 50 pounds. If you need/want any advice on gear to lighten the load, just ask me. I had my pack weight down at 45 pounds this year including the spotting scope, tripod and large internal frame daypack for comfortably carrying the aforementioned items.
