AZP&Y Report post Posted February 15, 2006 KWP - Thanx for bringing me back on track........................ True the back of the AZ Hunt Regs should be evaulated deeply before a hunt choice is made. Many do not know how to find the information and interpret the stats. The Arizona Hunter Education class does spend some "quality" time explaining some of the "strategy" involved. I'm thrilled with the BULL that Shawn Patterson took this year in Arizona. He earned his draw, waited his turn and made the very most of the results. "While taking such a bull is indeed an unforeseen blessing, Patterson had reason to have his 2005 bowhunting hopes set high after drawing a prime Arizona elk tag, only his second in 12 years of trying" http://espn.go.com/outdoors/hunting/s/h_fe...rson_05-06.html ? KGAINES Report post Posted February 16, 2006 I don't know how I got from getting drawn to getting nuked, sorry. I will bet that most of the people that are complaining mess up on their app., or put in for a real popular unit or hunt, or they haven't put in for a few years and think that they should be drawn because it has been a while since they went. I have never been drawn for elk, I have been putting in for 8 years straight, I have my brother put in with me and only put in for archery bull tags now, it is my choice and eventually it will pay off, as for deer my last three choices are oct. coues hunts, just so I can go hunting. AZcoues_addict Report post Posted February 16, 2006 I'm right with KGAINES almost exactly, except I have one less elk bonus point! I also usually apply/draw a rifle tag for coues units with near 100% draw as an alternative for 3rd, 4th and 5th choices. For elk I hope to get the archery bull tag soon because I'm getting tired of waiting with 7 bonus points. I do study the units and draw quite a bit, but wish the AZG&F would reveal hunt draw statistics for the bonus point number and percentage of tags being drawn in each hunt. This way we would have more information on true draw odds, since those posted do not take bonus points into account. Here's some eye candy and proof that there are good bucks that can be found on 100% draw units since these hunts are the first rifle hunts of the year. Last year I shot this 105 coues on my fourth choice!

DesertBull Report post Posted February 16, 2006 You can get the bonus point break down per unit from the game & fish dept. You have to go down to the main office and fillout a request for public records and give them $25. They also have a report of the total draw. How many people put in for each hunt, res vs non-resident, etc. $50 for that one I think. THe bonus point report has more valuable data though. They are just database print outs, no formatting or comments. Just raw numbers.

Manipulating, ranking and searching the data is much easier that way. I hate to spend the money and then have to key it all into my own database.
DesertBull Report post Posted February 17, 2006 The key to the bonus point print out is that you can see how many BP's it took in each unit to get into the first phase of the draw, the "bonus point pass" drawing. Remember, they take 10% (changing to 20% I think) of the tags for each hunt and start handing out tags based on bonus points alone. It just takes a quick look at each hunt number to determine if you can get into the first phase or not. A unit 1 archery hunt usually takes max points to get a tag in the first phase. In fact, there are usually more max point apps than tags available. Unit 6b and 4B however, can sometimes start giving pass phase tags to hunters with as few as 6 points.
