Dads First Deer

After finding out the draw results for 2011 I thought this was going to be another year of not being able to make it out with my dad. Due to my work schedule and other priorities I have not been able to go with him for about 5 years. This year I was able to move somethings around and made it out opening morning of his hunt.

We glassed up two bucks right away at first light and I kept tabs on them while they fed to see where they were going to bed. After watching them make their way into a palo verde thicket the smaller of the two bucks made his way towards the bottom of the canyon. Guessing the bigger one was bedded down we made our way into about 150 yards of the thicket. While we moved positions the smaller buck came back to bed with the other buck. After setting my dad up for the shot the small buck busted out and gave dad a shot at a full run which my good friend who was with us confirmed was a clear miss.

Well after the miss my dad was down in the dumps. He has been hunting for nearly 26 years now and at the end of the hunts its always the story of the one that got away. I tried my best to help him stay positive and reminded him that the other buck hadn't busted out. So we got another angle of the thicket and found the other buck bedded next to a palo verde. The rest was history as Dad made a good shot on the bedded buck with a quick follow up shot to anchor him for good. He isn't the biggest buck on the mountain but the memoory will last a lifetime. I am truly thankful for my Dad and family to raise me as a hunter and I am thankful that the man upstairs made it possible for me to be by my dads side for this. At 46 he killed his 1st and hopefully for many years to come we can enjoy many more together.

Congrats, get that one mounted!

I have one that looks very similar mounted, broken eye guard and all. I shot it with my dad and he shot it's brother all within the same few minutes. Those stories make for better trophies a lot of times than just a big animal. I think my dad is even more proud of that day than I was, I am sure your dad will have this as one of his top memories!

Yeah I asked him if was gonna mount it but he said no but he has been busy working on a european mount. I'm considering buying him the skull hooker for it when he is done with it
