Pine Donkey Report post Posted October 31, 2011 Sunrise found Mark (MJE1) and I sitting behind binoculars in the top of the Dragoon mountains. This area has produced some studs over the years. It is rough but beautiful country. Mark has a tag for next weekend.

tjhunt2 Report post Posted October 31, 2011 That's some good looking country. Actually it looks like it could be some tough country to hunt. Wish I was sitting behind the binos with you all. Good luck! TJ

bobbyo Report post Posted October 31, 2011 PD you have earned my respect calling those mountains Coues paradise. One only needs to look at the success rate of that unit to know that it is the toughest hunt in southern Arizona if not the entire state. If you have taken studs off that mountain I have nothing, but praise. I have gone entire hunts without seeing a single deer. I hope it never happens, but if I get a tag in that unit again I will be PM ing you. . I will stick with 22 as much as possible.
COUESAZ Report post Posted October 31, 2011 You are in a unit that does have some good genetics in it for some nice bucks. There are some in there. Make sure you have a lion tag. You are about 200 yards from a canyon with a huge cat in it. That is if im seeing the photo right. There is a big wooden water shoot that comes off the mountain into a canyon. be looking and ready early in the mornings. About 20 years ago my dad and i shot a big cat that was killing a little buck.of in a box canyon to the south west of your photo spot. I used to see huge bucks every day in that unit. I still see them just not as often. So glass hard and be ready to get off the roads to some high vantage points and you will be surprised.

It is Slaven basin as seen from Soren's pass. There have always been lions in this area as well as the entire unit, but there are some good deer here also. The secret to hunting this unit, as with many southern units is glass, glass, glass. Remnants of the old wooden chute can still be found, but it was not a water chute, it was an ore chute. It was used to get the ore from the Abril Mine, off the mountain. The Abril was a lead/zink mine that was last operated in the early 50's. Once the ore was off the mountain it was trucked out through the Slaven Basin. The base of these mountains are always popular with hunters who want to stay close to the road, campers and hikers. This tends to push the deer to the rougher country.

We have done pretty well each year by putting our time into it. We scout year round, and have multiple cameras out. Here is a sampling of what we are after this year. The problem I have with shooting a deer like this is that I have a hard time keeping my finger off the trigger when a smaller, nice racked buck stands up.
