Legal to carry pistol during Archery only Hunts

Recommended Posts

Good News-

Especially if you hunt the border zone  or have run into a big cat or bear somewhere in a canyon.

It's legal to carry a pistol (side-arm) during the ARCHERY ONLY -HUNTS!

This was released by Game and Fish-

Archery-only hunters can now carry a non-hunting handgun for protection

The October issue of ?Hunting Highlights? reviewed the legality of carrying a handgun during an archery-only hunt. The rule at that time was that hunters participating in an archery-only hunt could not possess a firearm, even if they had a concealed weapons permit.

Since that time, the Arizona Game and Fish Department has issued a directive allowing hunters participating in an archery-only hunt to carry a non-hunting handgun for personal protection and safety. As a guideline, a non-hunting handgun shall be defined as a handgun with a barrel length of 6 inches or less that does not have a scope or any type of electronic device.

Handguns meeting this definition may be carried during an archery-only hunt for personal protection only. They may not be used to take any species of wildlife while participating in an archery-only hunt.

Yes where did this info come from? That is an amazining amount of common sense for a government bureau to display and I would be a little leery about it.

It was sent out yesterday.

I was hunting the border zone  for weeks this January and now there will be no question of the legality.

WOW! I guess its official then. Three cheers for common sense!

I am glad to see the G&F finally do the right thing in regards to this issue. Anyone who has shot a handgun extensively knows that the effective range of a gun such as that described is less than a decent compound bow. I just hope now that some clown doesnt ruin it for the rest of us by trying to shoot a deer 'in self defense' with his pistol.

I thought It was totally illegal , but I guess if you want to you can. I just know there is some unhonest people that might just put a bullet in an animal during the archery hunt. And for the ones that are glad to carry one down in the 36 units I hope your handguns are compareable the the AK-47's and Uzi the drug runners carry. Just remember to turn around and look the otherway and you will be safer that to make a deal about it. I have ran into some of the crossers that are coming to the U.S. to find work and they just ask for water and I am more than happy to give it to them.

Not only desperados, but have you ever been sittin in a tree and wondered what would happen if a mean, gnarley 300 pound bear decided to come up the tree and pay you a visit?

Ever try to shoot your bow straight down?

And what if a hungry man-eating lion comes over from California and jumps on you? Ever try to shoot your bow at something that is on your chest?

These things would probably never happen, but it sure feels good to have a handgun on ya.

Yep, thank you Game and Fish for a good common sense decision.

The thing I never understood ,(and I am glad GF looks at it this way now) is that if you shoot at anything you are not supossed to it is illeagle, if you shoot a dear w/ a pistol during your archery hunt, its illeagle- basicaly the only poeple who will violate this law is someone who already has or would any way!

I never went out w/ out a side arm(I hunt alone and deep in the back country)

It served two purposes, a PDW , and a means to signal ICE. will it beat a AK47 no,

It doesnt have to , but it opens the gap , and I can put rounds on target easily out to 50 yrds. I go out for one major reason -to enjoy the open country mostly untouched by humans. 2nd to hopfuly fill my tag, and 3rd come home .

I strongly doubt that there will be a mass rise in illeagle taking of wild life because of this. and as rembrant stated more or less try knocking a arrow w/ a large hungry critter coming at you real fast.
