First Post - Succesful Weekend

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone. Long time follower of the website. Thought after a few years I should join up.

Had a succesful weekend. My buddy and I headed to an area where we have tagged out 5 years in a row now with quality bucks. This weekend was no different.

We had 2 tags. Started Friday morning at first light. While walking to our glassing spot we jump to bucks bedded down. One runs, one stays. I saw it was a quality shooter, so I shoulder my rifle and shot. He jumped and ran about 40 yards and dropped. My picture below is me with the LSU hat on. I wish there was a better story but it was a 30 yard shot.

Started yesterday morning with a mean hike. We got to a glassing area. After 90 minutes of glassing a hill side I spot a group of deer on the opposite canyon wall. We range it at 500 yards. After watching the group for about 20 min. we see 3 bucks. 2 small 3 points and then a straggler who looks like a good buck. My buddy gets in position and we pick a clearing out to shoot. It takes about 5 minutes for the buck to get to the clearing. We range it at 375. The buck steps out, stops, bang. My buddy squeezes off his 300 WSM and the buck drops where he stands. The hard part started after that. It took 4 hours to pack him out.....not fun.

We quickly scored them out....and we are not professionals in the scoring game but we are guessing mine will go about 91" before deductions and his about 87 1/2". His is bigger than this picture suggests....you cant really see how nice the spread is.

Happy hunting to the rest of you. Good luck!

Matt

Congrats Matt on a successful hunt and two wonderful bucks. I especially like the mass of your Coues' rack. If you wouldn't mind sharing some specifics on your equipment (i.e. rifle caliber, scope, binos, etc) it would be sincerely appreciated.

Here's last years buck taken out of the same general area. Weller's did the mount for my buddy.

I am shooting a remington 700 chambered in 7mm rem mag. I reload myself. For Coues I shoot a Nosler 150gr. ballistic tip. I have a Luepold VXIII 4-14 scope. I borrowed some swaro's bino's 10x50's from a friend...without them, i doubt we would have seen the second buck.

The second deer was shot with a weatherby 300wsm topped with a Leupold VXIII 3-9 (I think). He was shooting custom reloads tipped with a 180gr. Nosler accubond.

Unit 36b.....We got a small area that we have been fortunate enough to avoid the crowds the last few years. It's a mean hike and maybe thats why we are seeing the quality we are.
