bowsniper Report post Posted October 22, 2011 I will never understand why some people think it's so easy hunting bear or lions with dogs. I can tell you that the only people I have ever heard call it easy are people who haven't done it. Ditto! You could say the same thing about people who want to ban baiting. Anyway, although there are probably a few guys who just want to "show up and shoot" the bear out of the tree, hunting bears and lions with dogs is ALL about the chase with the dogs! The shot, if taken, is almost an after thought. The fun (for me, anyway) is all about the enthusiasm of the dogs and trying to keep up with them. I have a guide friend who runs dogs for lions and bears. He has never shot one himself because his kicks come from training and running his dogs. Even if he doesn't have a client, he's out treeing bears and lions. Anyone who supports hunting with dogs but is against baiting ought to give it another thought. If they ban bait, banning dogs probably won't be far behind. Mark
NoDinks Report post Posted October 22, 2011 Lark- it's Timothy "Treadwell" like they said, and he did grow up to be s*!t, .... Bear Sh!t! Nobody has told me why u would hire a dog guide yet. - Not the thrill of finding them( the dogs do that) - not the thrill of out witting em! Is it bc More expensive? Less likely to succeed? More "risk"? Harder to keep up? Or just idiot looking to spend extra money?
COUESAZ Report post Posted October 22, 2011 Well you have not told us why you have four dogs for the taking of birds and small game. It increases your odds of taking and retrieving birds and small game. I stick to my statement that you sir are an imbasole.

.270 Report post Posted October 23, 2011 can ya vote more than once on the poll? i see 7 voted no. was wonderin' if rinkydinky voted 7 times? oh and yes rinkydinky. guys will hire a houndman just because they want to spend extra money. i'm sure that's the reason. it makes the most sense of your options. at least the most sense i can make of your horrible command of written english. were you homeschooled? yeah, it's gotta be that they wanna spend more money. that or maybe it's because they would really like to shoot a bear and think it would be fun, sporting, legal and follow the accepted rules of fair chase. dzell Report post Posted October 24, 2011 No Dinks you have truly started one of the dumbest most useless topics I have ever seen on this website. You just dont have a clue. Hunting bears with dogs isnt for everyone my guess is that your affraid you would wet yourself in all the excitement of the dogs baying and the bear popping his jaws and charging you and the dogs. Just cause some of these guys with dogs might be more successful at hunting bears than you are doesnt mean you should go trash talking the dogmen.
runningbird Report post Posted October 27, 2011 Here is my opinion. Hunting with dogs is just a different way of hunting. Hard to compare for some people. To me it's like rifle hunting and bow hunting. I bow hunt. I have no interest in gun hunting. But I certainly respect people that choose to gun hunt, it's just not for me. I have one little black and tan hound. She was given to me by a friend that has many dogs, and hunts lions, and bears with them. She has good breading but I have not really trained her. Last week we were out checking some of my whitetail spots, She got on a bear for about an hour. I was amazed at the ground that they covered, I mean truly amazed. I'll tell you I'm in good shape and there is know way I could even think of keeping up. What a blast! Can't wait to get her out again. I also think a spot and stalk would be much easier on a person. If I wanted to get a bear and did it with my dog I would feel like we both really accomplished something!
savagman Report post Posted October 27, 2011 Wow - I guess this is a hot topic.... Dinky has my experience all wrong and I would welcome an opportunity to discuss it with him face to face. What right does he have to dismiss or diminish the quality of my hunt? I love to hunt with well mannered, well trained hunting dogs. I don't have the time, money, expertise or understanding neighbors it takes to own my own pack. If I could swing it I would own hounds and proudly hunt them on legal game. I was fortunate to meet a great guy who happens to also be a guide with terrific dogs. Throw in a heaping spoonful of good luck and it was a fantastic hunt having seen many bears and taking a good old boar. I did not chase my own bear up a tree but I am quite sure Dinky doesn't sniff, point and retrieve his own birds. The experience for me is watching the dogs do what they love and were born and bred for. I own an aging beagle and have hunted with him for the past 15 years. We have had our share of good times and difficult times. Many trips would have been more productive if he hadn't chased the quail and flushed them out of range. But those are but chapters in a long and satisfying book. I find it sad to hear that Dinky owns dogs and seems to be missing the point. They are not tools to be used as one would binocs, GPS, rifles, scopes etc. They are hunting buddies, companions, and trusted friends. He obvioisly is vasty superior in all ways and I am sure he is a tough SOB having treed bears by himself and all. He is certainly a master hunter having used no animal assistance to sit on his arse, glass and shoot his bears. I respect his right to hunt legally and enjoy doing it his way. I just wish he would respect others that march to the beat of a different drummer. Eric
