Need Help 2A-2C Mule Deer

Recommended Posts

Hello fellow hunters! My friend and I got drawn for the MD hunt in 2A,2B and 2C. We had planned on going scouting but because of work and a family emergency, we have not been able to get up there. We are Coues hunters and actually drew this hunt as a 5th choice. Would anyone be able to point us in the right direction on where the deer and bucks are? I have been told that a good place might be east of the power plant along the state line but did not know about access. We will be hunting on horseback so we dont mind covering some country. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot!

Just out of Springerville if you follow the Little Colorado River north tends to hold alot of nice mule deer bucks. I would focus on the water supplies like the creeks and tanks that hold water year round. As a kid my Papa would take us kids around to all the tanks up there in 2A,2b, and 2c and tranfer gold fish to all the tanks. We would always jump bucks at these water tanks in the early mornings. Quite often if you stop along the road by Becker lake you can see all the mule deer hidding in the meandering little colorado.

There are some deer along the Little Colorado River, all the way past the lake, but much of that river crosses private property and most of the prime areas are locked up. Last I heard, you can hunt in the state park.

I may be wrong, but I think the game department's wildlife area, just out of Springerville, is closed to hunting along the river, too.

I've spent some time in 2B during elk hunts and have seen very few deer. If I were to try to find a buck in that unit, I think I'd look at the juniper country a few miles north and east of St. Johns. There are access problems up there, too, so scouting definitely is needed.

Don't know anything about 2A and C.

Good luck.

I have heard of some big deer killed in 2b and c .o had an antelope tag in 2b 3 years ago and seen some good deer country. I have always wanted to check it out myself! I would check areas behind lake and over on the border and the highway looks good also

I grew up in St. Johns. Those units used to have some really good deer. The Ellsworth buck came out of there a 260 non-typical!!! Over the last 5 or more years the elk have really moved in and displaced a lot of the deer.
