Tracker Report post Posted February 2, 2006 Deer, Elk, Lion, Bear, Bobcat. I have 7 different traditional bows & 5 compound's. I just purchased a traditional Eastern Indian flat bow. But my favorite is a custom longbow my wife gave me for Christmas a couple years back. It is made from Osage Orange wood & shoots where you point it. My first arrow with it took a pigeon out of the air. Along with big game I have taken ringtail cat, duck's, geese & pheasants as well as several other animals. Azlongears Report post Posted February 2, 2006 Well thanks for the shout out Terry , Not sure if I'd go that far, but I have spent alot of time out and about with a stick in hand. DB- I have taken both Coues and Muleys with a longbow. I enjoy "spot and spook" but occasionally will sit a stand. In 03' I took a hybrid buck from a stand over salt in unit 8 and was lucky enough to shoot a bear the very next morning. I shoot a 65# Morrison Dakota Longbow, with 230 grain Wensel Woodsmen broadheads on carbon arrows. Shooting a big heavy head like that really stabilizes out the arrow flight, and besides for this elk, I've had pass throughs on every animal I have taken with this set-up. Tracker Report post Posted February 3, 2006 Hey Littlebear, Great looking Bull. I see pictures from time to time of big Arizona bulls with that funky top on them. Is that a genetic from all across the state or is it unit specific? Just wondering. It looks pretty cool.

It looks pretty cool. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I've only seen "crowns" on elk in unit 1, 27, and 6A but that could be because that's the only places we've hunted them in Arizona. Elk and the red deer of Europe are the same species, and red deer typically have them. What I'd like to know is how many people with long bows and recurves have mounted sights on them. When I started bowhunting a Ben Pearson Javelina recurve was as modern as you could get. We shot our recurves instinctively and I lost of a lot of deer and javelinas I now know I could have killed if I'd had sights. A few years ago, before I dropped a truck on my arm, I made a simple post sight and proved to myself that it improved my shooting +++100%. Instinctive shooting works, but I needed to practice more than I did. BillQ
Shiras Report post Posted February 3, 2006 All I can say is that I hunt with a curve and have been for 7 years. My trophy room via bow is bare. I shot my first buck this year and thought for sure I had him. I made the rookie mistake of coming out of my stand too early, and probably pushed him. (This was an eastern wt) It's something that not a lot of hunters do, simply because of the time and effort it takes to become proficient with a stick. To some it's all about the destination.....to others it's about the journey.-Shiras
Azlongears Report post Posted February 5, 2006 Yea I'd say it is a "funky top," I am not sure what causes it, but genitic variation sure is wonderful

BowhuntCoues Report post Posted February 7, 2006 What a toad bull LittleBear. Nice job. I couldn't hit the garage wall with a longbow or recurve. I tried hunting javalina a couple of years ago with a recurve that I have, figuring I could shoot one at 4 or 5 yards or so. Well, that didn't work too good for me and I had to go back to the compound to get the job done.
