Recommended Posts

Im new to this forum, so not sure if any one has posted about buck fever but figured i would try..

Any one got a funny story on having buck fever?

Mine was when i was 12 my first elk hunt on the greys river in wyoming, we were on a ridge line glassing some meadows when i seen about 100 elk come out from a thicket of trees! i seen the lead bull must have been at least a 6x6 high 200 maybe 300 class bull,,, i was shooting a lever action 308 i ejected all 4 shells even the one i had chambered and did not pull the trigger once! i never lived it down with my dad who was sitting next to me! we did not get a shot off at these elk but the guy down the ridge from us did.. hit a cow.

That is classic! I'm laughing and wasnt there.

The only thing I have close (because I've never had a shot at something big during season) was on a mule deer hunt. My buddy and I had spent the whole week talking about coues and how fast they get going when they kick in the burners. So I glass up a small 3x3, first deer I ever glassed. We work over like three mountains to get to him. I jump him and he bolts like greased lightning. I lead him a hair and the shot hits in front of him. That's odd, so I do it again, same result. I did that until my gun was empty. My mind kept saying to lead him even though my eyes said otherwise. I turn and my friend is rolling laughing. The deer had a broken front leg and could barely trot! So as he was trudging along I kept shooting in front of him. Funny how you KNOW that you are doing the right thing no matter what common sense tells you. He stills likes to bring that up.

Hey, did you end up getting that deer that you shot its leg? I have one story not about me, but about a hunting partner.

WE were out hunting coues down south a few years ago when a big buck jumps up from its bed. Well the sight of those antlers musta been too much for that poor newbies heart becasue he emptied his bolt action in seconds, not hitting once. He goes to reload and by now I've taken two shots, anchoring the deer. But as I look over, he is stuffing not shells, but cigarettes into his gun! Wasnt paying attention and all he felt was a long tubular object. He later told me he was wondering why he was having trouble chambering that one last shell that was "bound" to be a heart shot. Texas heart shot, maybe ;)

On a side note, I am not a smoker and yes, this sounds like something out of a CJ Box book but I promise it actually happened. I LaughedMAO at him after that,

Leg was broken before I ever got there. He said there was no blood just the lower half hanging there. :o

Mine took place this year on my first ever elk hunt opening mourning was sittin my blind for maybe 4 hours when a nasty storm was brewing so my father in law had my pancho for whatever reason I got out of my blind without my BOW to meet him about ten yards away well a bull decided to come in quiet and we look up and there he is 30 yards away my leg started to started to shake out of control the bull spotted the movement then was gone. Lats day I was able to hunt I was at my blind again alone this time I was playing angry birds rio when all of a sudden a bull bugles not 15 yards from me a scared the heck out of me ELK FEVER set in and so did the shakes missed that bull two time at 32 yard both were right over his back. My lessons learned are don't go anywhere without your bow in hand during a hunt even if nature calls you better have you bow and don't play angry birds rio while sittin a blind

When I was 12 or 13 on my first junior deer hunt in TN, sitting in a treestand opening morning. As soon as deer entered the corn field, I proceeded to lose my breakfast off the side of the stand. This was over 20 years ago and safety harnesses were not widely in use, but my uncle threatened to buy me one for Christmas since he had to grab my shirt because he thought I was going to fall out of the stand. He still kids me about that hunt.

I made up for it the next year by dropping my first deer, a nice basket 3x3, out of the same stand on opening morning. :D
