Mike the Impaler Report post Posted October 1, 2011 Hi, I am hunting 36A this year and had some questions. I've never hunted Coues before. I am assuming that everyone hunts in higher elevation. Is this correct? Also, how do you access 36A? Where do you go in to get to the mountain areas? Thanks, Mike
Red Rabbit Report post Posted October 1, 2011 AZGFD has info about access to 36A http://www.azgfd.gov/h_f/hunting_units_36a.shtml Duwane and Tony have a good book on hunting Coues. http://www.coueswhitetail.com/bookstore/books.htm More basic tactic stuff here http://www.coueswhitetail.com/hunt_strategies/hunting_strategies.htm I suspect you will find coues from the flats at the base of the mountains to the tops. Pick your likings. And welcome to CWT.com.

Pick your likings. And welcome to CWT.com. Thank you for the links. I actually just got in from scouting. I went down the end of Sirrieta Rd. It's like a spider web with all the trails there. I did find what I thought were some good spots. One in particular that was about half way up a hillside. There was standing water. It looked like the water was kept there from the way the rocks were formed. The water was stagnant and had the green film on it so I don't know if its being used. There were sign on the water edge though. I know there is a way in on the road between Amado and Arivaca so I'll try that tomorrow morning. I've seen one o the water catches but don't know if I should hunt that because it will also attract hunters as well (opinions please?). I don't want the sun to come up and be able to see 4 other hunters. I haven't deer hunted since the early 80's but this year I decided to get back into it. I'll be going with one of my daughters. Mike the Impaler Report post Posted October 3, 2011 Ok, here are two types of terrain I'm running into. The first is the water. I can sit at the water hole all day I guess. Or, should I be investing my energy into the terrain in the later photo? For the last photo, I was thinking about sitting at the base of the big rock formation in the center o the picture. I did a lot of scouting today and ran into a guy wearing a pith helmet, ha ha.

This year that area has a ton of water everywhere. the last week has sent a large amount of water, filled up some dried ponds, and flowed a few streams. more is to be expected this week as well. 36A has deer everywhere. I have hunted there right out of Arivaca 20 minutes away and tagged out with two others 3 years in a row on the same mountain. There are a lot of deer everywhere in A. CouesWhitetail Report post Posted October 3, 2011 I would glass the mountain...and has been said, there are lots of deer. Muleys will tend to be in the flats and coues in the mtns. The further you get from the roads, the less hunters you will run into. Call the unit manager and talk with him. Also, check AGFD website for unit info, that always gives great starting places and discusses access points.
