(September 25, 2011 - 0930 hrs.) - Pleasant Valley Ranger District fire specialists are managing the lightning-caused Tanner wildfire, now about 2,000 acres, which began on August 20 near the peak of Armer Mountain in the Sierra Anchas. Fire activity may be visible to visitors and residents in the Tonto Basin, Globe, and Young areas and also when looking south from SR 260. Downdraft winds from a thunderstorm off Armer Mountain pushed the fire across Hwy. 288 yesterday evening around 7 pm and the fire burned through the dispersed camping area. No campers were present and no structures were lost. Hwy. 288 is closed from Rose Creek south to the intersection with Hwy. 188. "Yesterday, crews were focused on successful burning operations around the private properties of Dream Catcher and Rose Creek" stated John Thornburg, Fire Management Officer. Due to the increased size of the fire, a Type 3 team will assume mangement of the fire today. standman Report post Posted September 25, 2011 Yeah I was up there when they were closing the roads. They were building a gate too and closing the road up workman creek. Looked like the fire jumped and got real hot on the west side of the highway at workman creek. Lots of dark black smoke with a pretty good plume. The tonto website said workmans creek area is closed due to construction, not due to "blinky," the three eyed fish. WadenAz: Thanks so much for posting this. We have tags for muley there also, and in fact due to scheduling i get a 4 day weekend this week... we were gonna head up and scout... serious change of plans since we cant get to the timberline to set up camp. I was up there 2 weeks ago and there were 3 pieces of printed paper on the sign board and the same 3 on the fence they put up. Those pecies of paper were not posted the previous week I was up there. (Aug. 29, 2011) Tonto National Forest officials announced today that the Workman Creek Recreation Area will be closed, from the Elks Youth Camp east beyond the Workman Creek falls and north towards Reynolds Creek, for hazardous waste removal at Workman Creek Uranium Mine Sites, located on the Pleasant Valley Ranger District, Young, Ariz. Construction is scheduled to begin on September 6 and continue through December. Heavy equipment will be operating throughout Workman Creek on both sides of the canyon, side roads, and in the Cascade and Creekside day-use areas. The purpose of the closure is to ensure public and contractor safety. Wildlife restrictions and winter weather conditions determined the construction dates. An Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis (EE/CA) was previously prepared to present a detailed analysis of reclamation alternatives that were used for agency decision-making. The analysis conclusion was that there are site environmental concerns related to arsenic, uranium, and radium-226. The clean-up will involve excavating the hot spot areas in the day-use sites and on-site disposal; rerouting the All-terrain Vehicle (ATV) traffic to eliminate access to the most highly affected road segments; and closing the adits (mine openings) with waste rock or bat gates. Copies of the project fact sheet are available at the Tonto National Forest Supervisors office (2324 E. McDowell Road, Phoenix, AZ) and the Pleasant Valley Ranger District office (Young, AZ). Been up there numerous times and there has always been signs posted about the dangers of the radiation for the past few years No worries. I have a camera half way up that hill. I was going to go get it when I ran into the signs and the fence across the road. Now I have to wait till April 1st-ish to go get it.
