G&F installed Wildlife watering stations

Recommended Posts

A Nebraska friend who bow-hunts is between jobs here and has been scouting the area around his trailer. He was checking water holes and playing around with his GPS and just generally killing time doing something he enjoys.

He saw several deer, but all the tanks he had tracked down from his maps were dry. He wondered where the animals were getting water. When I asked him if he had visited the G&F built water stations in the area he had not seen them and did not know they existed.

Now this got me to thinking. <wisps of smoke issuing from ears>

These trick tanks do not show up on any maps I have, and I can?t find a listing of them in Arizona. Is there any decent source of this information? Just how many of these water sources are out there?

G&F does have a book about waterholes, but I would not waste my $, based on comparing it with unit 9. The tricktanks listed in unit 9 are already shown on the forest service map. Trick tanks that have been constructed in recent years have been more secluded and their roads covered up. They are not in the book.

I'd say to befriend a FS employee, G&F field officer, or go on a few water projects and find out about past projects.

I agree with Red Rabbit. Organizations such as Ducks Unlimited, Quail Unlimited, etc. usually raise money to put in guzzlers around the state. Get with members of these organizations and volunteer to help with the projects or even joining these groups should help with finding the locations of these waterholes.

I BELIVE THE G&F HAS A BOOK WITH ALL THEIR WATER TANKS IN IT. OF COURSE IT IS FOR SALE AT YOUR LOCAL G&F OFFICE! I THINK I HAVE EVEN SCENE IT AT WIDE WORLD OF MAPS!

If you can find a book, they are pretty good for use in the southern units... Most have roads right up to them though... In the National forest they aren't really that helpful...

I have the book!, but it's not updated. It's about 5 years old. I never had much luck with the book though. Iv'e found 2 wildlife tanks with rain catchers and underground holding tanks on my own. I think there are alot of them not listed. in the book they listed like 3 or 4 of them in every unit. Some units only listed 1 or 2.

I have a copy of the book and I know for sure that not all of the trick tanks are listed. I've found a few of them over the years that don't show up in the book.
