UPDATED 10/06/2011

Well today is the day that we roll out, hunt starts Friday. This is my first ever Elk hunt, Bull or Cow. I hope for success, I have some really good friends that are comming out to help. Also, some CWT.com members have given some really good tips and direction. Will report results and pix when I get back. Wish me luck.

p.s. If you see us stop by for a cold beverage and talk awhile. Good luck to all tag holders.

I've been out all most every day for the last 2 weeks and this is one of the worst years of big bulls in 3a3c I've seen in a long time. I hope the bulls decide to show up and you find a monster. I've been helping a friend and another buddy has the rifle tag so we may see you around. Have a great hunt.

would you say the unit needs another fire? ;)

I'm actually waiting to see what unit 1 and 27 can produce in the following few years in comparison to the units burned from Rodeo/Chediski fire

The fire hurt the elk hunting but not in the way most expect. The deer numbers went up because of the fire, the OTC archery deer hunters came in little towns and cities, drove atv's and side by sides over every road in the unit. That is what hurt the elk hunting IMO. I expect 1 and 27 deer numbers will blossom in the next few years.

It seems like everyone has the early rifle tag in 3c. I am up here with three friends who all drew. One had no bonus points and the other two had five points and drew on the same application. Bugling has been spotty but there around. Good luck to all those with the tag. Reference the fire/ deer issue it is my understanding archery deer will be a draw in 3c next year.

3c just got put on an alternative management plan. (for deer) We will see if they make archery a draw, lower youth and general #'s or what. The unit could hold much more game if they would let it.

Good luck to all the rifle hunters. Yesterday and Today, we found a few bigger bulls, starting to move in. Should be a good hunt.

I also hear from good sources that the FS is supposed to be starting control burning different sections every year to keep the growth from coming up too thick. Now if they will just do it.

sounds like people are saying numbers are pretty low in 3c. Being new to elk hunting I don't have a good reference for what is good or bad. but I saw at least one bull in each area I scouted, they were not in archery range but all good have been moved to rifle shots. My issue was not seeing very many cows for my sons jr hunt. If the numbers are down what would a normal amount of elk sightings be like in 3c? I do agree with a burn, there was so much new growth of that scrub bush that is was apain to hike.
