Coues79 Report post Posted September 21, 2011 Was up there this past weekend and it is indeed spotty and not goin real good in spots. guess some are hot though.... they shut up real quick after daylight. Did see quite a few elk in the burns.... one herd with around 20 cows and not a bull with them. seemed to be lots of folks up there; hard to get away. Brother just shot one this AM; a satelite bull. he told me he saw the herd bull chasing cows around but wouldn't he wouldnt make a peep. they get perty smart when all the folks start showing up on the weekends. He had seen Amanda and Scott at some point during the hunt but I think it was pretty early on. should be a kick butt hunt for the muzzy/general hunt up in those neck of the woods. AZbowhntr Report post Posted September 21, 2011 Chef has been in contact with her pretty regularly and may chime in. When I asked the other day how she has been doing he said that it has been tough but she has passed up some 300 class bulls waiting for the rut to kick in a little better. Hopefully she will get it done in the next couple days. She deserves it.
Chef Report post Posted September 21, 2011 Not much to add from what's already been said. She has been fighting a cold while going after the bulls. To say the bugling has been spotty is pretty accurate. Not only from area to area, but day to day. Some areas of the forest have been closed off and they seem to be holding a pretty vocal bunch of elk. She's been up and down mountains and canyons and she passed on a few bulls. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she gets a break. I spoke with TJ this morning and he's heading up to her camp as we speak. Hopefully he brings in a little luck. Go get em guys! elkaholic Report post Posted September 21, 2011 this is the time when most hunters gotta make a big choice - all those 300 class bulls are flashin in your mind and the shoulda thoughts start floodin in. Everyone wants to place their tag on a bull of a lifetime , but when you are down to 2 1/2 days left to hunt, those smaller bulls are gonna be given more than a glance. hope she fills her freezer , reguardless of the size of the bull. Go Amanda !!
Chef Report post Posted September 22, 2011 She almost got a really good chance at a big bull this morning! A bull was following some cows and stopped right before he got in her lane. She ranged the cows at 35 yards but the bull never followed. Elk are finally starting to rut a bit harder. More bugles today than on her whole hunt.
