It will be interesting to see how game and fish handles this with the need to control ELK and Javelina populations within the Payson city limits... Idjut is a kind word

Rembrant Report post Posted January 27, 2006 There used to be some really big whitetail bucks on Cedar Hill in the middle of Fagstaff. I have a photo of a road-kill buck that may score a typical 120". I was chasing a different buck around with a camera that would easily go 100". Never did get good pics. It was rumered that a guy was trying to arrow one of these trophy bucks in a Sept hunt, when public panic put the warden on him with words of advice about common sense. I ran into Bob Barsh, WM for unit 7 while stomping Cedar Hill looking for whitetails one fine morning. I asked him about the legality and ethics concerning the bowhunting of deer in town. His answer was favorable to the idea, as it certainly is legal, yet discression and common sense was again emphesized. I haven't seen a whitetail in town for about 5 years now. I think they've all been road-killed out. I never had the courage/gumption to try. I just didn't want to be face to face with a screaming granola liberal non-hunter and wind up on the front page of the Daily Sun in my camos. Maybe that's just good comon sense, but now that the opportunity has passed, I kinda wish I had tried a time or two. Hunting geese is one thing, but 100" to 120" Coues Deer is in a whole 'nother league. Could you blame a guy for that? Mike

Mike <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I guess it depends on how close you are to people's houses. I myself wouldn't like someone hunting real close to my house, even with a bow. You don't know the intelligence of the hunter and if he would be able to pass a shot that might be dangerous to occupants of the house, especially if the buck/bull is HUGE. It's not worth the risk to me to have a family member or neighbor hurt. Ok, there is one neighbor I wouldn't mind getting thumped with a rubber blunt, but that is a story for another time! .270 Report post Posted January 27, 2006 didn't some jerk wound a buck to death with a bow up in cave creek a couple years ago, right in somebodies yard or on the golf course or some deal? i know it happened up there, but can't remember zakly where. guess it offended the heck outta some folks, but was perfectly legal. cave creek passed some ordinance makin' it illegal afteward and there was a lotta negative press towards hunters about it. thing is, a guy oughta have enough couth to not shoot half-tame semi-pets in front o' folks that might not like it. we all like to hunt and don't really understand folks who don't. but a guy needs to still be a little sympathetic to other folks. the arrow in the beak deal is just plum stupid. bchoitz Report post Posted January 27, 2006 Rembrant, Consider if the shot wounded the buck and he bled out while running from the hill into a neighborhood. "'Scuse me ma'am, I'm not tryin' ta smash all yer petunia's, I'm jes follerin' my blood trail. Soons I find where that dang buck went I'll be outta here." There's that common sense thingy again. mr_grandote Report post Posted January 28, 2006 I couldnt agree more with the problem of hunting around homes and people that have a different view on the matter. I had a 7m bull archery tag this year and had a great time chasing elk around flagstaff. That being said, I also had a homeowner see me and my partner walking to a tank in the afternoon behind his sub-division and I think he must have been rather pissed off because he came back with his shotgun. He didnt know where we was exactly, but fired his shotgun in our general direction 3 times. I dont think he was trying to hurt anybody, just send a message that hunters are not welcomed shooting at their golf course running, pet-elk. Other than that, I had a fun hunt. I missed the bull we were chasing at about 60 yards. Would have scored about 370. As a post script to my comment though, I would like to add that the liberal media has deserves some credit for trying to ruin hunting in AZ and continues to try and take away our rights. Too bad. Rembrant Report post Posted January 28, 2006 Good points! It probably is best that wounded animals don't die in home owners front lawns. But dang!! The atmosphere sure has changed in the last 30 years. I'm glad I didn't start a ruckus and wind up on the front page of the news. And I'm glad I didn't do something stupid like leave a gut pile in somebody's front yard. I certainly don't want to give anti hunters any ammunition. But as a result of this common sense approach, I have allowed the granola crowd to affect my behavior. That stinks! I think most of us would agree, though, that there must be some comprimises these days. Funny how we can all take the high road in a chat forum (and I think we're on the right track), but when the Game Dept makes accomodations for political correctness, we all - including myself - get really ticked off and call them whimps! The archer didn't aim for the gooses beak, you know. It's good that we're thinking about this stuff. Mike
