Ok so this is my first tag in 23 for the October hunt. I've been scouting around the 5000' to 6000' elevation. I've been seeing some good deer and a lot of them. Nothing huge but some nice deer. I have a few friends saying I need to go up into the higher elevations. So my question is should I stay in the lower parts of the unit or head up to the higher parts?

ya I agree unless you have an area pinned out that you know holds mature deer up higher i would focus on glassing the lower area just to make sure your not passing something up, plus that unit holds some pretty decent deer around tonto basin as well or picture mnt what ever you want to call it.

I have seen whiteys from A-cross to all the way on top of the Rim. Don't rule out areas below 5000' I think finding a place you can glass a large area will increase your chances locating them as the other guys have said. I have a Muley tag for 23 later in the month so if I see any coues will glady send you a PM. Good Luck MThomas!

Well we probably started scouting a little early, but we started going out above gisela. Next we went to the hills above punkin center. Seen whitetail every time we went. Now we've moved over off the cherry creek area. Seen a few but nothing over 100" yet. The only mule deer we've seen have been in the foothills outside of punkin center. If I spot a big one I'll let you know. I'm not sure I'll have time to check out any areas up in the high ground.

Welcome to the site... Just a heads up... on the www. everyone/anyone can read what you post. I'd recomend keeping where you scout and how well you did to yourself or send info by personal message... Free country, you can do it how you please, I am just sayin'...

As to your question... The deer are where you find them... pick a spot that you like and pick it appart. In that lower country you will have high probablility of seeing more deer. Finding them in the higher country can be pretty tough at times... probly less deer too. On Fridays and Saturdays you can often find dear right in the town of Young at the Antlers or Valley Bar and also in Pumpin Center or Cactus Flats.... ;) :P

It's a big unit and I'm being pretty general. Trust me when I come across a big one I'm not telling anybody where he's at. Just haven't seen him yet.
