Kade's first antelope!

Recommended Posts

My 11 year old son Kade and I had the opportunity to go hunt New Mexico for antelope with one of my friends and his son this past weekend. We hunted about 40 miles north of Roswell and had a great time. We left Thursday night and got to the ranch early Friday morning and scouted all day. The ranch held plenty of antelope and none of us were realy picky... pretty much any antlelope would do. After my friends son made a nice 300 yard shot on his buck it was Kade's turn. A decent buck was located and the stalk was on! Not long after we followed the buck he laid down in a wash bottom facing us so the only way to close the distance would be a long hike to get behind him so for the sake of time (we had 4 bucks to kill in one day!) we opted to find another that would present us with a less time consuming stalk. It wasn't 20 minutes later and we had another buck chasing 4 does and the stalk was on again! After one failed opportunity the group didn't move far so we were able to change positions and close the distance to 435 yards. It took several attempts to find a comfortable shooting lane throuch the grass and cactus but finally Kade was able to settle in. When the buck finally came to a stop and turned broadside I gave the ok to squeeze off a shot. The 210 grain JLK bullet from my 300 RUM pounded the buck so hard I could see the shock waves move through his body through my spotting scope. There was no doubt this buck was dead! After a short walk Kade was able to claim his first ever antelope and only his second ever big game animal. Congratulations son on a great buck and some memories that will last a life time!!!

Very cool!!!

What is the big bald patch on that goat?

It was just a scruffy bald patch on that side. Really don't know why it was that way? The hair on the other side was fine... except that it had a pretty good size exit hole and a lot of blood so we were forced to use the scruffy side for pic's.

Thats really weird... Looks like the horizontal line is almost perfetcly straight!

I assume the RUM is braked to not need a dentist visit for the 11year old?! Bet that JLK did its work in quick order!

Congratulations to Kade on his nice antelope. That had to be awesome to watch him put the smack down on it at such a young age. Thanks for sharing Kade's trophy with us. :)

I thought that was NM from the background. I was east of Roswell about a month ago and there was no more vegetation there than is shown in your picture. They are in one heck of a drought.

Congratulation to your son on a very nice antelope.

Congratulations Kade for making the shot, great picture's.

If that 300 ultra did'nt have a brake, Kade will be playing in the NFL someday!

Kade, if your reading this, dont forget to thank your dad for taking you hunting.

Congrats to Kade! Good shootin, way to get it done.

Thanks everyone!

Yes the gun has a brake and Kade shoots it very well. He's been practicing with it shooting a 10" steel gong out to 600 yards for the past year and a half and we both have a lot of confidence in his shooting. He has a youth deer/javelina hunt coming up in a few weeks which we hope to turn into another great time!
