mulie hunter Report post Posted September 4, 2011 My 2011 Archery Hunt began on Saturday August 27th. We arrived at our campsite around 2:30pm. Excited and ready to hunt we got camp set up in record time. Only for a heavy downpour to interrupt the Evening hunt! Sunday, Monday, not much of anything. Finally on Tueday Evening about 630pm I spotted a big 4x4 and a nice 3x3 in a small meadow feeding! Talk about pumped up,I was excited! I knew where I would be in the Morning! But things don't always turn out as planned! Wednesday morning arrived and I overslept by 30 mins!!!!! So as me and my hunting partner are on our way to find the bucks from the previous evening, We come across a Really nice 4x4, followed by a 2x2 and a spike! Instantly I know I want the 4x4, as I try to range them they see me and begin to walk away! I slowly begin to move in the direction they went, I notice they only went about 50 yards and the 4x4 has stopped broadside by a tree his head is partially covered by the tree but I can see part of his antlers, and the Spike is standing behind him, looking straight at me, I think to myself busted, but the spike just keeps looking my way. So I range the 4x4, Thanks to my Range Snap. I try to calm down, and draw my bow, I settle my pin behind his front shoudler and release! Thwack... is the sound I hear and I see the deer move! I immediately turned to my hunting partner and said I missed! I think it hit a branch, sounded like I hit the tree!! I was so upset!! I began to kick the dirt!!! Hey, I'm being real here! So I tell my buddy I'm gonna go find my arrow! Still upset I head up the hill to where the deer was when I shot. The deer was standing on the left side of the tree, I walk up towards the tree on the right side as get by the tree and begin to look for my arrow, I don't see no arrow, but Instead I see a dead deer about 6 feet behind the tree! With my arrow in it! What a suprise! I went looking for my arrow and found a deer! It wasn't the 4x4 though but the 2x2! I had lost track of them in the trees and brush as they moved the 50 yards, and it was actually the 2x2 that stopped by the tree not the 4x4! Thats ok I'm still excited, hey it's a archery buck, and in my book any archery buck is a trophy!!! I yell to my buddy I got one, it's not the 4x4, but a nice forkhorn!!! The thwack I heard that sounded like my arrow hitting the tree branch was actually my arrow hitting him in the spine, he only went about 6 feet and dropped! I learned a valuable lesson that morning(One I already knew, but I allowed my emotions to get the best of me) Never, I mean never take your eyes off the deer after the shot, even if its sounds like you hit a tree!!! Here he is!
