couesobsession Report post Posted September 1, 2011 I'm looking to get into fly fishing some of Arizona's streams and rivers. The realization that I "needed" another excuse to go fishing came after I fished the fast flowing Lower Salt for trout and had a blast catching them on spinners, but it just felt like it would be more fullfilling to be flyfishing. So, my question is to all you who know anything about this, what fly rod and reel should I get for trout fishing? I am on a restricted budget of under $100, I know thats not much. Can I even get a rod and reel that's that cheap and isnt cheaply made? All I need is something that will work and stand up to a little abuse. I also am clueless to what weight rod and reel I should use for trout, and what flys work best. I was looking at this http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/Scientific-Anglers-Fly-Fishing-Kit-with-Videos-5-6-weight-Trout.aspx?a=538746&pm2d=CSE-SPG-5-NEXTAG&utm_source=nextag&utm_medium=cse would this work well? Im open to all suggestions. Hopefully snapshot will chime in, he sure does get some awesome Montana rainbows on the line! For flies, I've heard various nymphs and wooly buggers work well. What should I get? I'll mainly be fishing places like Oak Creek Canyon, the Black River, the Little Colorado, maybe a few lakes, though it seems like recntly they've all been on the bottom due to the heat. I know its a pretty all-encompassing question, but, honestly, I dont know where to start. Thanks for any help!

Red Rabbit Report post Posted September 1, 2011 You might check into the TFO, Redington and StCroix rods, SierraTradingPost.com for some specials. Also look at the forums at http://www.azflyandtie.com/ A short 3 weight for the small streams, 9' 5 wt for the trout lakes on a pontoon.

KCA205 Report post Posted September 5, 2011 Wal-Mart used to sell an Orvis 9 foot 2 peice 6 wieght rod with reel, backing, and floating line for less than $100.00 I bought one for my son to see if he really liked to fly fish. Turns out to be a pretty good set up to get you started. I have fished with the rod and it better than I thought it would be. Don't know if they still offer it, but I would have to recommend it to someone wanting to get started on a budget. It is a long way from a Sage, but it will get the job done. I appreciate everyone's imput and am considering the Cabela's option very seriously, but man does tha Solo 3 piece rod and a Solo Reel look like good value! Looks like what I was looking for, but 9' is a little long. Oh well, is still looks like what i am going to go with.
