firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted January 21, 2006 so, as you all know it took me a ton of shots to kill my deer this year with a rifle that regilously produces 1/2 inch groups with the load i was carrying! well the other day i went out and shot it and my new 7mag, the groups wer between 1 1/2-2 inches! i was like what the heck! so today i took the rest of the bullets i have from that batch apart and found out i was over my load by more than a grain! might not sound like a lot but when i have shot the 1 grain over (65.5) the groups really opened up! i was realoding on a broken scale! so maybe there is hope for me to have a one shot kill one of these days! Diamondbackaz Report post Posted January 21, 2006 1 1/2" can still provide an adequate Kill zone. Human error is a bigger problem out in the field since you don't have the controlled situation you have at a gun range.
fatfootdoc Report post Posted January 21, 2006 Casey, I think the sheer size of your deer's antlers was what threw you off, nice try at a cover up though ag
firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted January 21, 2006 DAMNIT you saw right through me! az, 1 1/2 inches at 100 is like 3 at 200. and i missed between 3-5 inches away from a good shot, still kniced the lungs, but not much more than that!
az4life Report post Posted January 21, 2006 I suggest you use try this... The story is that you were giving warning shots, before you dropped him. ( That one worked for my father-in-law! Is it true they closed the area you were hunting in Casey. Something about hazardous waste cleanup. LEAD! I think we all know, Buck fever is a terrible thing! KGAINES Report post Posted January 21, 2006 He was probably trying to get it to stop so he could take it out by hand, but the bullets were loaded wrong so he hit it on accident.
vegasjeep Report post Posted January 21, 2006 I really do not think that one grain in a bullet is goin to make a difference like that.
Chef Report post Posted January 21, 2006 Casey, The buck you shot was in training for the next Matrix movie. It did dodge most of your bullets but then got tired.
coues addict Report post Posted January 21, 2006 Casey I would bet money that most all of us have hurled some bullets at deer that totally missed their mark. I know a guy thats always bragging about his sub. .500 inch groups and then when he goes hunting he always shoots the animal in the "wrong place''. Its called excitement, adrenalin, whatever! Thats what makes it all so fun. Look at this way. If you shoot more bullets you get to practice your reloading more and the more you practice your reloading the more you will have to go shoot to check your new reloads. Then the more you will have to go to Sportsman`s to get your supplies and your "Gear Fix'' like we all do! It`s like a "cycle'' man and I know you love it. Thats what keeps us all going! If I had a dime for all the shots I have missed I would be a happy man, Not to mention wealthy! Later Rich
DEERSLAM Report post Posted January 22, 2006 I really do not think that one grain in a bullet is goin to make a difference like that. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It can and does. Sometimes a half grain can make a good group into a great group. Still shooting off hand at a moving tiny target (sorry Casey ) can be a very hard thing no matter how accurate the rifle. wklman Report post Posted January 23, 2006 all you have to say is that shootin' em standing isn't fair because your such a good shot and that you miss the first couple of shots to get them running and more of a challenge for your skills.
