azphil Report post Posted August 25, 2011 After reviewing my trail cam pics I was pretty amazed at what was had been captured. For the first 3 weeks the elk were coming thru pretty regularly. Then my camera captured the pic of a mountain lion- I did not get another elk pic for 1 week. Do cats have that much affect on animals as large as elk? For the record 90 % of the pics were of bulls- minimal cow/ calf activity there. Any observations anyone else might have on this situation?
.270 Report post Posted August 25, 2011 in elk country, lions kill as many elk as they do anything else. a big lion can kill a big bull. you don't see that a lot, but it happens. they tear cows and young elk up. seen many kills over the years. Lark.
TAM Report post Posted August 25, 2011 I for one don't believe that when a cat is around then all the deer and elk leave. I have personally watched a lion in Mexico walk within 30 yards or so of a doe and a fawn and they just kept feeding. I don't think either knew the other was there. Another time in Mexico I watched three lions stalk, kill, and eat a javelina all while a lone doe fed some 200-300 yards away. I was watching from 600 yards and could hear the pig squeal so I know the doe could hear it as well. She was on full alert and kept looking towards the sounds but just kept feeding. While archery elk hunting in unit 10 last year we watched a lion walk within a couple hundred yards of some antelope in an area that held about 300 head of elk. I think a more likley senario to your situation is that the elk have transitioned from their summer habits to their pre-rut or even rut habits and therefore aren't coming in to your camera anymore. I think the lion walking by when it did is pure coincidence. But it's all just my opinion
