tomgobbler Report post Posted August 25, 2011 i got home from work and my wife said that my father in law said that it looked like there was something wrong with my favorite horse. the one i had raised from a colt and had for the last 15 years, took me more miles then i could ever count, and saw some of the prettiest country that God has created from the back of him. anyway as i went to look at him i could tell right away he wasnt doing good, the close i got the worse it looked, soem time during the night i guess he shattered his upper leg, half way between the knee and the shoulder, dont have a clue as to what happened. but either way the result was the same and i had to go put a bullet in his head, and then barry him... one of the hardest things like that i have had to do in a long time..... i'll sure miss that horse! Chef Report post Posted August 25, 2011 I feel for you. Looks like you two shared a long life together. Tough situation that didn't get any better by you having to be the one to put him down and bury him. I'm sure you'll think of him often and share the stories of the "best horse you ever had" for a long time.

tjhunt2 Report post Posted August 25, 2011 Thoughts and prayers for your loss. I'm sure you both depended on each other many time and the love was felt both ways I'm sure. It's never easy putting down an animal. When you feel like it I too would like to see a picture of your horse and maybe hear a story or two when you get around to it. firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted August 26, 2011 That is easily the worst part of having pets... Dogs, cats, horses, snakes what ever it may be. Hopefully, the 15 years you spent with him has enough positive memories to keep out some of the sadness. I feel for you.

tomgobbler Report post Posted August 26, 2011 thanks guys i appreciate it, the hard part was that the vet coulnt come until noon the next day ( he would of just given him a shot and he would of went to sleep) but i couldnt let him suffer over night until noon the following day, so i had to put the bullet in his head my self. so that was kind of tuff to do, i really didnt think it was going to be to bad until i actaulyl did it..... but that horse took me a million miles, we road into reves ranch in the superstitions at least a dozen times, into the matazatzals a few times, into fossil creek, mount baldy, a hundred trails down on the blue river, and so may other trails i cant remember right now, i rode him into pack out 3 eld and a deer last year alone, and on many scouting trips, i had just ridden him to pack in salt and a tree stand for my brother upcoming elk hunt just last week.... he could outwalk and out travel about any horse i rode with.... i'll find some pictures. but thanks again tommy

Perkele! Report post Posted August 29, 2011 Tommy, As a horse owner I understand you. You did the right thing and as usual it was the hardest thing. This is what helped me when I did the same years ago. The Horse's Prayer -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Feed me, water and care for me, and when the day's work is done, provide me with a shelter, a clean dry stall large enough for me to lie down in comfort. Talk to me, your voice often means as much to me as the reins. Pet me sometime that I may serve you more gladly and learn to love you. Shoe me properly that I may serve you in comfort. Never strike, beat, or kick me when I don't understand what you want, but give me a chance to understand you. And finally oh master, when my youthful strength is gone, do not turn me out to starve or freeze, or sell me to some cruel owner to be slowly tortured or stoned to death, but do thou, my master, take my life in the kindest way, and your God will reward you here and hereafter. You will not consider me irreverent if I ask this in the name of Him who was born in a stable... Amen
