jlhcoues Report post Posted January 12, 2006 Thought I would give you guys a litlle insight on our san carlos hunt this year. We did our usual ting that we do every jan. and go waite in line at scgf dept for 10 hours and we were lucky enough to snag a couple of unit B tags for 2006 before all the guides gobbled them up. We hunted the unit the nov 2004 and thought it would be a great jan hunt thinking the bucks would be rutting hard, little did we know, this jan was like summer time. Luckily my two sons Shane and Josh had the nov tags 2005, they passed on some helpful info to us. Day one I had my son Shane hunting with me in some areas he had hunted in nov. the day started pretty slow until about 10 or so. We ended up spoting 8 bucks in the area but none that I relly wanted. That afternoon we went into a areas that I figured not many people would want to hunt and glassed up a 100 inch buck but it was to late for a stalk. We talked about the area and Shane said he had found a spring in nov. that wasnt on the map and the deer were hitting hard, so I decided to check it out the next day. Day two I located the spring and he was right they had tore this place up, I began glassing and it wasnt long I began to spot deer. I had spotted 9 bucks befor I spoted the buck I wanted to take. Being late in the day I backed off and decided to come back for this buck. Day three I went with my brother into some new area that we wanted to check out, wasnt to productive for deer but we found some great tanks full of bass. Day four began with me back at the spring glassing for my buck. It didnt take long before I had him located, but he was across a huge canyon that took me until 10 to get across and set up to find him again. I coulnt find him at all but I spotted the two bucks that was with him laying in a cholla thicket so I decided to waite him out, hoping that he would come back on the mesa and feed. Finally around 4:30 he showed up, he began feeding towards me at a slow pace, I was getting worried about the time I had left before dark. Around 5:15 I had marked a cholla that he was feeding in at 327 yards and boom he was mine. The buck scored 111 gross and had a first mass measurement of 5 inches! I told my brother about this spring and that he should go check it out, dang if he didnt. He shot his from the road... 119!!!! jlhcoues john howard

You could also look it up on their website at www.sancarlosrecreationandwildlife.com or scatrw.com Check it out, tags usually sell out a year ahead.
jlhcoues Report post Posted January 12, 2006 How much does a tag for San Carlos cost?? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Daryl, costs are1000 for nov, 1500 for jan, 2500 for d east and west. dont worry about the R100 you can kill just as good as bucks in the other units for alot less money. All of the 2007 jan hunts are sold out A<B<C, alot of the nov tags are left and the jan D tags. jlhcoues
