creed_az_88 Report post Posted July 17, 2011 Ive decided to slash something off of the bucket list and I am wanting it to happen next year. I have decided to plan a high country archery mule deer hunt, preferably in Colorado. Are there any early season tags that have a fair likelihood of being drawn without any preference points? Utah would probably be my next choice if i was unable to draw in CO. Are there any units in Utah with above timberline elevations that can be hunted with an otc tag? Thanks in advance for all of your help. Creed
GRAYLIGHT Report post Posted July 17, 2011 Creed, All tags in Colorado and now in Utah are draw... We used to be able to get OTC leftovers in Utah but the archery all sell out during the draw now. If you pick your region and put it as first choice you will get it in Ut. A good place to hunt above timber in Utah is hard to find! The Pahvant does hold big deer and there are areas above timber there but the bucks, believe it or not hide out in the deep canyons! If you want Colorado, there are plenty of units in the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's that have plenty of deer in the high country that can be drawn with 0 or 1 point... I cannot say one unit is way better than another because the high country has deer in it all across Co. A good place to start could be the Sangre de Cristo's... Big bucks and a true high country backpack hunt... You will see 160-180 class and if you hunt hard you will have a crack at a bigger buck!
AntlerObsession Report post Posted July 17, 2011 Eastman's Bowhunting Journal had good info on trophy potential in CO and NM. 2 Units had excellent potential for trophies in the early hunts: 43 and 74. I am headed up next weekend to Unit 74 and 65 to scout for hunts we are doing this fall. I'll send you pics of all the bucks I see. There are some of the 15 - 20 alpine bucks I've been watching that approach 200", maybe exceeding it! Won't know for sure until we get them on the ground!
