Does anybody know where I might find some ar500 steel, preferably scrab hunks, somewhere in the Phoenix area? If i can find scrap I'll figure out a way to mount it. Ive seen the guys who sell AR500 targets online, but can only imagine how much shipping would be.

Young Buck,

If I got you the money ahead of time, would you do a couple plates for me as well? I've been interested in getting a Target set up. Let me know! Thanks!

I was planning on taking what ever Temtco had for scrap. He is one of my regular customers. I told him I would take the ugliest cut up pieces he has. If he bring me a couple I'll make sure you get one. I told him I was in no immediate hurry, and I prefer cheap over pretty or fancy silloutte shape. I'm expecting something in a month or less. Ill let ya know what I come up with.

Happened across the last 1/2" mild plate I had... 260/140VLD, 223/75AMAX, both @ 550 yards.

1/2" AR500... Buddie's 264WM/140VLD, 350 yards.

Side by side... I ain't guessin, and will take the AR500 every time, even though I likely "won't see much difference".

Can't learn it from any book, nor make it up... ;)

we have a 18 inch plate that we shoot at 1,000 yards and its 3\4 inch thick we shoot a 338 Mclearn

(it's custom) and it just put's dents in it no holes I'm not sure how fast it's goeing at that far but I do Know it has the same amount of energy at 1000 yards as a 30-06 does at the muzzle we weilded old coil springs off a car on the bottom of the plate and its pretty cool

I know this is an older post but Industrial Metal Supply had already cut 12 x 12 squares of armour plate they were selling for really cheap. I think they were around $30. You will have to drill the holes but I was able to do so it just took a little longer. They also have all kinds of precut mild steel square and round for cheap. The problem with the mild steel is the big guns go through it like it isnt there. I had the 300RUM out and even at 725 yds with a 190 Berger HVLD it put a perfect hole right through the mild steel plate.

I actually just bought a 12x12" 3/8" hunk from industrial metals a few weeks ago. They said it isn't AR500, but equivalent. I'm hoping it will hold up to a 300gr Berger, 2850fps MV at 500yd+. We will see. It drilled easier that I thought it would. I used a good bit on a press with plenty of cutting oil. I took my time and didn't let the bit get too hot. I am having some sizing die issues, but I should be able to test it with .284 162 A-max and .308 208 a-max in the next month or so. I also have some 230gr Hybrids on the way I'm gonna try on it.

You are right I think it is closer to AR400 steel. I had looked it up based on the brinell rating he said it had, something like 380. I think you should be good with it for awhile I had the mild steel as well and drilled both the same way you did and there was a BIG difference in what it took to get a hole in the armor plate stuff.

Happy Shooting!

Go to industrial metal supply on 48th street between southern and broadway. They have a ton of pre cut pcs. And a huge remnant area with various odd cut pcs.

Put some 230gr Berger OTM on the steel @ 400yds. They were probably 2850 MV. I didn't bring my chrony to test. The metal took the hits like a champ. There is a very small dimple in the metal the size of the bullet point. You can't see it, but you can feel it. I hade the 3/8" 12" square plate hanging from chain. Those 230gr-ers sure did smack that plate.
