singleshot Report post Posted July 10, 2011 a good friend's cabin was lost in the and loaded Yeah Lark it did. Sorry for not posting a reply earlier, and thanks for being concerned. The 12 hour evacuation notice got turned into a 2 hour evacuation notice and it got pretty hectic. Dad emptied the safes and packed the truck with ammo. Mom spent 2 hours trying to figure out how to break down her computer. Dad has his lot's pretty cleaned up of ladder fuel but the fire fighters did an outstanding job of saving structures. Their home is on Highlands drive and they used Highlands as a fire break on the south side. Even some of the cabins that have not been cleaned up in years were saved. They evacuated to Luna for the first week and then came down to Safford to wait it out. Dad will be 80 this year and the stress and the heat sure wore him out. They were very happy to get back home. He's been going to Reserve a couple of time a week to the range they have burning up ammo on the silhouettes. They came down on Thursday and Dad was pretty excited to tell me how he banged the coyote silhouette at 300 with his 35 Whelen shooting 250 grainers, 3 for 3. Thanks again to all the fire fighters both wildland and the volunteers squads. They did a PHENOMENAL job.

Lark. It's built on a Mauser, nice piece of walnut and it's pretty tight. He still buys some of those old junkers at the shows, puts a decent piece of wood on them and sells them for enough to get something a little better. He likes some front porch sittin. Stop by sometime, my mom will feed you home made bread and if you hit it at the right time apple pie like no other.
Non-Typical Solutions Report post Posted July 11, 2011 We ran over to Alpine today for the first time since evacuating my dad's place. Say what you want there are some bright spots out there but it made my stomach ache. First photo here is just dropping into Alpine, my dad's place is to the far right, red roof. Next shot is just climbing out of Alpine south on 191 looking back at South Mountain, it is ugly. Last picture for those of you who have unit 27 Bull tags, this guy looks really lost about two miles south of Hannagan. Thanks to all the firefighters....my dad's place was spared as were many, many others.
nohoch Report post Posted July 11, 2011 NTS, could you tie up that lost bull you found and leave him by your Dad's place....I'll be by in my november hunt to help him find a new home!
Pine Donkey Report post Posted July 11, 2011 NTS, That first picture is pretty typical of the areas I saw around the burn; they dont look real bad if you look straigt ahead, but if you look up, theres not much left. Glad to see your dad's place made it. I am amazed at all the places that were saved. A lot of dedicated fire fighters worked hard to bend the lines around the structures. Pine Donkey, How about your folks place in Nutrioso??? We came home last night through a heck of a storm and I worried about the flooding.

NOHOCH, I figured giving you he was 2 miles south of Hannagan was more than enough info to give somebody some hope. Two years ago we had 2 Unit 27 Bull tags, went way off down south and saw one bull while my wife watched 20 bulls run through that meadow in front of my dad's place....they know where to hide
Pine Donkey Report post Posted July 12, 2011 My parent's place made it through without damage, just needed a good cleaning to remove ash and soot. The meadows around Nutrioso have a lot of elk in them right now, including a lot of babies. One afternoon, about 1:00 I saw over 300 elk within a five mile stretch. Many of them have been staying in the meadows all day long rather than bedding in the timber. I guess it is just easier for them since there is nothing left to eat as they walk through the timber. I think the heards made it through without too much loss, now they are congregated near anything green. The rains have started, and soon the grasses will grow. Place will never look the same, but with rain healing will begin.
