wardsoutfitters Report post Posted June 25, 2011 I wanted to let everyone her know what I have been hearing , From what I understand the Forest service is wanting to close all areas affected by the fires in Az for a period of a year, This includes units 1, 27, 29, 35a, 36b. The commission is having a live meeting today at 2 and have added this matter to their agenda. I would strongly suggest you attend if you can or watch the meeting online. tcharchery Report post Posted June 25, 2011 I believe the Forest Circus has already had way to much influence. The Horseshoe2 fire didn't need to be so big and devastating. They kept on setting it on fire!! Shouldn't the forest service, at least the Douglas district, go away now? The forest is burned up. What exactly are they going to do now? AZLance Report post Posted June 25, 2011 The Forest Closure order already states that the forest will be closed until Dec. 31st 2011. It is online on their web page.

They back burned over 50,ooo acers that other wise would have not burned , and this is only the stuff I know about. I was told one day that they had the fire contained in turkey creek , cotton wood but were going to back burn 35,000 acres all the way across to rucker, what a bunch of bull shoot! someone needs to be held resoponsible for this!!!! CouesWhitetail Report post Posted June 25, 2011 I really doubt the USFS will close all the burned areas during hunting season. That would be a bit crazy, even for the USFS. According to the AGFD presentation, the fire severity of the Wallow Fire has been relatively low in lots of unit 1 and 27. The USFS doesn't even close areas to hunting during their prescribed burns. AZLance Report post Posted June 25, 2011 If you remember the Aspen fire in unit 33 a few years ago, all burn areas were closed to entry for over a year. Fortunatley, that fire didnt burn the entire unit, and there were places to still hunt.
billrquimby Report post Posted June 25, 2011 Don't know about unit 27, but nearly half of unit one's elk country was not even in the Wallow Fire's path. Also, there apparently are a great many areas within the fire's perimeters that the fire skipped. Bill Quimby

Also, there apparently are a great many areas within the fire's perimeters that the fire skipped. Bill Quimby Exactly! I've got the unit 1 hunt this year, and there's no doubt it will still be a great hunt - if the feds don't screw it up for us. This really chaps my hide. They were the ones who reacted too slowly to beging with and let a small fire turn into a HUGE fire, now they want to over-react when it's too late to do any good. Typical knee-jerk big-government B.S. Tell you what, if they close the forest and G&F says too bad to tag holders, I'll probably take my chances with the forest circus and just go hunt. I wonder where AZG&F will stand if you have a valid tag, but the feds say you can't even access the areas that weren't affected by the fires. The whole North half of unit 1 was untouched, and as others have pointed out, even the burned areas stil have tons of huntable country.
AZLance Report post Posted June 26, 2011 "Any violation of this prohibition is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000.00 for individuals, and $10,000.00 for organizations and/or imprisonment for not more than six (6) months. [Title 16 USC 551, Title 18 USC 3885, Title 18 USC 3571, Title 18 USC 3581]." If I had waited 10+ years for a elk tag, I would think the 6 months and $5000.00 was a relativley small amount, and take my chances! They gotta catch you before they can fine you!
