Lance Report post Posted August 3, 2011 Congrats on your tags! In my openion, unit 10 is an awesome antelope hunt!!!! No need to point out spicific spots, There are good antelope throughout the unit! Yes, you need to have your eye on more than one buck!!!! Hunting isn't always about holding out for the biggest, but I think this tag is one not to be wasted on a lil buck. Its easy to fill an antelope tag in this unit on any given day if you can see and shoot. So if I were you, I would take advantage of the true trophy hunting opportunity you have!!!! You may not get the chance again.... at least not very often. So I would take the time and put forth lots of effort to find the ones you like and or the biggest ones (that includes learning how to reconize the big ones!!) And don't get trigger happy! Or maybe hire a guide to help you make the best of it. What ever you do, I wouldn't take this awesome tag and opportunity lightly! Make the BEST of it! good luck in what ever you do and remember to have fun! Lance
200"mulie Report post Posted August 3, 2011 wasnt looking for spots..from what game and fish said can almost be found anywhere. I have never been up that far north before, Was seeing what can i expect, weather wise, terrain wise, hunting pressure....i am keeping an eye and hoping for lots of rain up there so archery hunters dont slaughter them. But from what i hear and see in the forum..is lots of antelope, carefull of private property, and have fun. THAKNS FOR ALL THE INFORMATION you could give me. MattMan Report post Posted August 14, 2011 I'd like to see a 3yr waiting period accompanied with the BP system. I noticed that you and your wife drew the tag with 10 points this year. Nice to hear that you'll be hunting with her! Way cool! I'm just wondering if you like the current system because you obviously benefited from it? My kids are currently 10 and 12, and including this year have collectively had 5 Deer tags and 4 elk tags in AZ. It ain't all "Luck". It's reading and understanding the system... and AZ's is still the best. I can remember applying for early bull in college, before you could buy a point, and praying EVERY year that I DIDN'T get drawn. I wouldn't have had the gas money to make it to Salt River Canyon much less unit 1. I read and understood the system, and applied for hunts I thought were impossible to draw. Point about CO was that to draw a primo tag, we'd need over 10 points, with NO chance to draw until then. No sense paying out of state fees, gas, and lodging for less than a trophy tag out of state when we can hunt the rez in our back yard OTC. I don't suck at math, and a waiting period, no matter how long, or how you slice it, is ONLY punitive in nature. Reducing applicants by 1000 won't do anything to statistically change your odds... so what do you plan to accomplish other than punishing a successful applicant? And which goat tags in AZ would you group into the non-trophy or less desirable pool? Can't find one hunt that I like the odds... Had a lifetime hunting partner and mentor punk out to apply with some 'friends' cause the three had max points. Haven't hunted or shared a camp with him since, and will never forget. Only BP buddy I've EVER had is my wife. We started applying for goat together, and decided we would apply together till we got drawn together. EVERYBODY wants a primo tag. Unit 10 is well known as a primo tag. THAT'S WHY THEY'RE HARD TO DRAW. I told my wife we have to make the best time of it we can, cause we probably won't ever draw again. Tines Report post Posted August 14, 2011 MattMan, Congratulations to your kids! It's nice to hear when the heritage is being passed on to the next generation. It's only going to get harder to get them off of the couch with technology these days. Hunting, by nature (especially in AZ), is "punitive". We can't have it all, all of the time. We know what happens when we DO have it our way. But that's logic, not punishment like you're eluding to. But going back to what I mentioned in my last post. What's so wrong with "waiting your turn"? That's all I'm saying... Reducing applicants by 1000 won't do anything to statistically change your odds. Please explain this to me. I'd expect the odds to change drastically if 1000 applicants didn't apply for your favorite hunt. I DO suck at math so please help me understand this. I guess some might look at drawing a premium tag as "punishment" because it MIGHT limit you for a couple of years after that. But this "punishment" you keep eluding to would ONLY apply to the species that DON'T offer an alternative to their respective rut hunts. Why aren't we complaing about how "punitive in nature" it is to hunt sheep and buffalo in Arizona? That's not fair that I can only kill one buffalo in my lifetime. Or after both Rocky and Desert, I'm done?!? That's crazy! We both know that it's not crazy and it makes sense. Why is waiting a "punishment"? We would be waiting because we were more fortunate than thousands of other applicants! Let's look at it like "wow, I drew one of the most coveted tags in the world and got to experience something that many hunters dream about.... I can wait a couple of years to apply again". Sorry about your buddy who found some "friends" to apply with. Losing a good hunting friend is just as bad as a good girlfriend- they know ALL your secrets! Ha! Good luck to you and your wife on this hunt. Sounds like you guys know EXACTLY what you have. I like that in a hunter. Make sure you keep us posted on your successes. It's right around the corner!!
