Sir Buckwheat Report post Posted June 22, 2011 I drew a limited entry archery elk tag this year up here in NE Utah and since it took so much time and cost so much I decided to buy a compound bow to use so I could have a little edge. I love my longbow but using traditional gear you go in knowing the chance of filling your tag are cut in half. I found a really nice Hoyt Trykon that is a year newer than the one I sold when I went traditional. I'd forgotten how fast these bows are! I also forgot that they'll shoot clean through a tight bale of hay. Guess I'm going to have to fix my shooting set up. I'd also forgotten how heavy compounds are. I don't think my longbow weighs 2lbs. This is my new set-up. 70# '06 Trykon, cobra 5 pin sight, quick tune fall away rest, and 4 arrow hoyt quiver. Shooting 28" 5575 Goldtip carbon arrows. I was thinking about using the Rage 2-blade broadheads, what do you guys think? I used to shoot muzzy's before going to traditional gear but I've heard a lot of good things about Rage and like the idea of the mechanical shooting like my field tips. They way the arrows blow through the hay bales I'm sure it will blow right through a bull too! I shot bigger (fatter) arrows with my old Trykon and didn't get many pass thru's but it always did the job. These Goldtips are smoking fast. I'm going to take it to the archery shop this weekend and have it chrono'd to see just how fast.
120carp Report post Posted June 22, 2011 i would rather look at an inverter than a rage but thats just me. i would also look at wacem's sharp and very accurate. just as noted above there are good things about the rage but there is to much bad for me to be interested. there is better and cheaper than rage that you can have more confidence in. but hey thats just me? BowNut Report post Posted June 22, 2011 There are a ton of good heads out there. You will hear good and bad about every one of them you post about. I have hunted with guys that shoot Rage (don't myself) but I would not think twice about it I would shoot them. They fly awesome and cut HUGE holes! IMO I think more times then not it was a poor shot then the broadhead. I here guys say all the time "It was a Perfect Shot". Well a perfect shot with a field tip will bring down an elk(Not Recommended! ). I just think to many blame there poor decisions and bad shots on equipment and not on themselves in most cases. And the more popular the head the more bad stories you hear about them funny how that works.
singleshot Report post Posted June 23, 2011 Watch the broadhead test video at Hankparker.com under 3d products. Leans a little in one direction, but pretty serious testing of the Rage against a couple of other expandables.
Jackal Report post Posted June 23, 2011 I shoot and trust Slick Tricks and Wac Em broadheads. I just like the peace of mind of a very solid head that shoot's where I'm aiming. If your wanting a mechanical seen good reviews on the Swacker broadheads.
Sir Buckwheat Report post Posted June 24, 2011 Thanks for your replies. I looked at the SWHACKER video. Some of the info was interesting, like showing that both the Rage and the Swhacker had better penetration and square inches of wound than the 2 fixed blade broadheads. The only question I have on the Swhacker is if the blades don't deploy until its inside the animal what kind of entry wounds do you have? I know the wings or whatever they are have a single bevel edge but they don't look like they'd cause a very large entry wound. No matter how much damage is caused inside if the entry wound isn't large enough you won't get much of a blood trail unless you get a pass thru. I liked the looks of the Slick Tricks too. I started out shooting a 4 blade broadhead when I was 15 and never had trouble trailing game but after moving to faster bows I never found one that could be tuned so I switched to either a 2 or 3 blade tip. afmalinois Report post Posted June 24, 2011 I used a Rage on a 23 Late bull hunt a few years ago and didn't get crap for penetration and in turn lost the bull. It was probably all my fault but it completely turned me off to the Rage. Last year I killed deer with Tekans and Schwackers and they both performed like a dream. With the Schwacker I punched through both shoulders and got a complete pass through of an Illinois doe at 30 yards. The blood trail was nasty and easy to follow even though she only went about 35 yards after the shot. There was no damage at all to the head even after crushing all the bone that it did. The Tekan's did a great job as well. 25 and 40 yd shots ontwo Virginia deer and the arrows never slowed down. Blood trail was heavy and the deer only went about 50 yards each. Tekan's held up just as good as the Schwacker's and I have loads of confidense in both heads. I made the Tekans my go to head for this year but wouldn't think twice about putting a Schwacker in my quiver. Good luck on your hunt and I hope my info helps you (or makes the decision more difficult HAHA).

He's actually the one that got me questioning buying Rage. He and his friends all went to them right off and now none of them use them anymore, so I got asking around and got a lot of responses like his. So the decisions not any more difficult...Wish it were as easy as picking my arrows was!!! Pink Zebra Striped with the Nuge's name on them, that was a no brainer.
