.270 Report post Posted June 16, 2011 been talking to the 4 drag via computer a bunch. the fire is still marching south, slow and steady. burned out chitty, squirrel and warren canyons pretty good. they have a fire team in there. so far saunder's cabin is ok. i guess it really scoured out the upper part of the rim and down into dry prong and the malay country quite a bit. bet it burned up a lotta antlers. as long as the wind stays out of the south it should keep it from blowing up, but it is a long way from being done on the south edge of the fire. they lit a lot of backfires which worked pretty well because of the way the wind generally blows there. Lark. Lark: Reading "Chitty, Squirrel, and Warren canyons, Saunder's cabin, Malay Gap, and Dry Prong" brought back a ton of memories of hunting those places in the late sixties and very early seventies off my mule Jenny. That's more than 40 years ago, and most of the people on this forum weren't even born then. It seemed like yesterday until I did the math. Where have all the years gone? AntlerObsession Report post Posted June 16, 2011 My in-laws live just east of the rodeo grounds on the way out towards Alpine. They just called and said the fire that had topped out and slowed on Sipes just south of the highway has picked up again! Mostly sparse juniper and grassland, but serious enough they closed the highway east of the rodeo grounds. Our cousin was at Cal's glass in town, and got blocked off from going home. The inlaws, who have already moved back in, are getting all the water hoses they have, and spraying like crazy! Let's pray it dies down before it gets any closer to town! 6'-8' flames within 300 yds of their house!

coues7 Report post Posted July 1, 2011 Nelson Reservoir is currently being drained (2001-07-01). Tickets were being issued to ANYONE who attempted to fish the lake over the past few days. Ironically enough, though it sets next to the road to Alpine and you don't even have to walk anywhere except across the street, it is closed. Thanks US Forest Circus. Great job, burn up the forest, ruin our local economy, close all the forest.....the list is endless. Considering the state of the economy, this is really going to boost our economic recovery! They are lowering it a foot to help catch water to help with the flooding that will occur when the monsoons hit. They have a bunch of fire apparatus still using the lake to get water and they are in the process to try to get the lake opened.
