My Mule Deer is on the Wall!

Recommended Posts

I can't imagine the feeling Clay had when I called him Monday morning after a weekend in both Heaven and He!!. I began to explain how I had shot this buck the previous Friday evening in August, and had boned the buck out and gotten back to camp about 2am the next morning. I woke early to drive home to the valley, hoping to stop by Clay's shop on my way through Payson, and finish a dream weekend at home with the family. Alas, fate had something different in mind.

On a remote dirt road, about 2.5 miles from the highway, my truck began to sputter and, despite my best efforts, died, leaving me stranded. I started the hike to civilization, knowing that the longer it took to get that velvet rack to Clay, the bigger the chance of slippage. Even at the highway I had no cell reception so I started hiking. Luckily, a sympathetic gentleman gave me a ride into town, called a tow truck, and got my truck hauled off the mountain. Well, no mechanics' shops are open in the White Mountains on a Sunday, and we couldn't get the parts to fix it, so it wasn't until Monday afternoon that I was finally headed home.

Despite my best efforts to ruin a beautiful velvet mount, Clay took on the challenge of salvaging this lost cause. He went to work immediately, prepping the cape and skull and readying the antlers for preservation treatment. He let me take a few minutes to oggle some of the other trophies he was working on, from rhinos to red stag, and more 100+ Coues than you could shake a 7mm mag at!

Well, this is how the mount came out, and I would like to thank Clay for doing an immaculate job on my dream buck, despite a he!!ish trip back!
