Looking like a pretty bad fire season so far. Dry with high winds. I thought we might have to evacuate in Pinetop/Lakeside if the Locust fire had gotten loose. Thanks to the firefighters out there getting it under control.

It takes a while for SWCC and NIFC to get updated usually, these sites get updated when the people working in the regions get time. I watch wildlandfire.com and go to the Hotlist forum, from there select IA Southwest, IA is Initial Attack, and you can see new starts and continuing incidents. The updates here are from folks around the country at stations or listening to scanners, hence the early updates.

Going to be one helluva season this year it looks like, I've been out twice already and usually I don't get my first call till the end of May.

News on the Portal 2 fire, biggest currently burning in AZ. It saddens me to see the chiricahuas burning AGAIN. Haven't found any info. on fuel type anyone know if its in the pines? Satellite imagery showed it burning up to 7200 feet elevation.

bout 35,000 acres burned, no end expected until rains come, thank god that it has only been burning the ground, a mosaic pattern, and hasn't really torched the pines.

there is talk that it could go another 4 to 6 weeks. If we get good rains this monsoon season it will be excellent habitat guys, short term fire is bad, long term it is good for the country. In Wy we had an area we called "The Burn", my Dad drove a water truck on the fire when he was 14, we hunted that area for years and always got elk out of it.

Yes, as long as it sticks to a mosaic(ground fire) burn pattern, fires like this are very good for habitat. They burn away invasive species and help native, more nutritious grasses and plants to come back. It just makes me nervous because if it jumbs into the pines, they'll have a helluva time getting it out of there.

What I worry about with this fire is that is burning the areas that I have hunted goulds turkeys two out of the last three years, and I wonder how the survival rate of the turkeys will be especially since they are nesting now. How much of the new hatch has been decimated?

I've been checking on the Horseshoe 2 fire almost daily (and usually 2 -3 times a day). Its getting worse at almost 60K acres. I'm crushed. I practically grew up in the Chiricahuas. My grandfather built our cabin in W Turkey Creek in the 1950s and now my brother and I are taking our kids down there...thats 4 generations...and it could soon all be gone...

This is our cabin and the fire is heading right for it.....they have structure protection crews in the area, but I'm still real nervous. The roads are all closed (which I understand) so we haven't been able to get to it to get things out. Lots and lots of memories....
