Mexico eases Travel Requirements

Just in case you're interested ....

 

When I was in Caborca last week I was told that a paved road from Sasabe to Caborca is supposed to be built in 2006.

 

The highway from Santa Anna to San Luis del Rio Colorado also is supposed to be expanded to a divided highway next year.

 

The fellow who told me this is one of Caborca's movers and shakers and should know what he's talking about.

 

This could result in Sasabe becoming another major port of entry. At the very least, it will shorten trips to Altar, Caborca, Disemboque, Puerto Lobos, and Puerto Penasco from Tucson.

I know of a story from a " mover and shaker "about the road that was to be built, it was finished eventually, from Magdalena to Tubtama. At the begining of the last sexenio before Fox was presidente that road from Magdalena to Tubutama was supposed to be finished. It was only started, halfassly mind you, but "the funds were quickly exausted" So the road sat and sat.

So when Fox was elected so was the new presidente municipal of the Altar which included Tubutama. One of the first acts to get that road finished so off to Mexico city he went to get the funds. When he asked for the the money they laughed and said that the road was already finished and even provided a road map proving that it was already paved .

 

Eventually the road was finished and they did a good job too. But the complaint was that it used up the new terms moneys to finish it. As for the the money that was for the road originally......who nows. I hear it PAYS pretty good to be a politico en Mexico!

 

I do bet that this road from Sasabe to Caborca will be done alot quicker because another large port of entry will be a great boost for the economy!

Well, from what I've heard down in Obregon is that Bours is doing an overall good job as governor of Sonora. He's really been pressing this whole tourism in Sonora deal and I've noticed a difference for the better in the trips that I have made down there. So hopefully he'll make sure that the road getsdone quick, and without any of the money "disappearing."

Yes Bill,I know who he is, I dont know him personally but know about him and yes he's one of the movers and shakers,really close to became THE PRESIDENTE if I'm not mistaken.My friends know him and one of my friends wifes works with the city Mayor right now so they know him.

He's an intelligent, personable, photogenic young man who should do well in politics. I met him for the first time last week when he accompanied us to my U.S. friend's ranch in the Sierra Viejos. He took us to his family home in downtown Caborca and it was like visiting a museum. The furniture and fixtures dated back to the 1880s. It would be interesting if Mexico elected a president from a border state. Has it ever happened before?

Bill,we were really close..............it almost happened about 10 or 11 years ago with Luis Donaldo Colosio he was from Magdalena,even closer to the border then Caborca but right after a memorable speach in Tijuana a guy walked up to him in front of thousands of people put a gun on his head and killed him. Colosio is like a J.F.K. for the mexicans.

Ernesto the ranch we have hunted for years ( El Bolletal) is owned by Sergio Gonzales Roguel and his brother they are great people and run a great hunt he was good friends with Colosio talked about him all the time , we are not hunting his ranch this year but we were there for 3 years great People Do you know them? I remember hearing about the assassination of Colosio. Do you know which party Salcido will run on? Does he stand a chance?

 

It would be interesting if he were to win because I then could say I have met three of Mexico's presidents.

 

I shook hands with Echeverria (sp?) many years ago at the Flying Sportsman's Lodge in Loreto, in what still was the territory of Baja California Sur. He flew there to promote his plans to build the road down the peninsula.

 

Then, last year, I met Vicente Fox briefly in San Miguel del Allente, at a reception where he gave an award to Hubert Thummler, whose biography I just finished writing.

Bill,Ruben belongs to the same party of President Vicente Fox (the P A N) party. If he stands a chance?? well that you never know.......nobody tought Fox will became president and look where he is now.

Ruben lost in the past elections but he is not done,he is still in politics......so will see.

I think Ruben could surprise a lot of people, too, if they give him enough TV time. As I said earlier he is personable and highly intelligent.

 

Didn't Fox just withstand a challenge from the mayor of Mexico City? When I was in D.F. last year the newspapers and TV were flooded with the mayor's charges against Fox and Fox's charges against the mayor.

 

I know nothing about Mexico's election procedure. Are candidates chosen by the party, or are there primaries such as up here?

Yes Bill candidates are chosen by the party,then the candidates will do their campaing,then after that the people has the decision.....the poeple choose who they want as they presidente.

 

I'll be in Caborca in two weeks.............maybe I'll go and shake hands with him.....like I told you before,my friend wifes has her office next to him.

I understand that the people elect presidents, but are the candidates who will represent PAN and PRI selected in elections or are they simply appointed by the parties?

 

If you do shake hands with him, please say hello for me. Tell him I was the tall, fat guy traveling with David Hanlin and jaguar hunter Tony Rivera.

 

He will interested to know that doctors confirmed that Hanlin had a minor heart attack and a small stroke while he was in Caborca. He spent a week in hospital in Tucson, where they opened three clogged arteries with stents. They were blocked 80% to 90%.

 

Ruben was grilling meat for us at Hanlin's ranch when Hanlin had the stroke. Hanlin's speech is improving, but is not back to normal yet.

 

Please tell him I wish him luck if he does run in the next election.
