Opening weekend juniors hunt

Recommended Posts

My 13 year old has proved himself with a couple pigs, deer and even his first archery elk kill this past September, but turkeys have been a thorn in his side for the past 2 years. This is our third year hunting the beasty birds in 23 and have had a bit of action but this past weekend was dead quiet. I know there was a juniors camp up higher but unfortunately we didn't have time to stop in to see how everyone else was doing. Was anyone else up in 23 this past weekend that had any success?

He's itchin to get back after it so we'll be back up there the for the second part of the hunt.

We were in 6A and kicked up every variety of animal in the forest. Mule Deer, Elk, Antelope, squirrel, Rabbit, etc. Not one Turkey. No gobble. Zilch

The junior turkey hunt was very good for us. I will have a post later today with pictures and video. We killed 5 long beards in 2 1/2 days of hunting even with the wind. We had to work the birds a little more to get then to pull but most of the gobblers we got on were by themself or with another gobbler. This made it a little easier to get then with in range since they were not with the hens yet. Maybe the last two weeks of the hunt will be better for you and he can finally kill that old long beard. Good luck.

We hunted unit 1 and 27 friday thru sunday. My daughters first hunt. Friday was very active with birds talking quite a bit. Saturday and Sunday the birds were very quiet where we were. In the three days we saw 15 toms but all were with hens. We had one group with 3 toms strutting with about a dozen hens. I was able to call three of the hens to within 10 feet of us but none of the toms followed. Sunday morning we got on a group with 7 toms and about 30 birds total. It was neat to watch 7 toms strutting around within 80 yards but just couldn't get them to get any closer. One tom was strutting at 35 yards but it's head was kind of tucked near his body and then he turned and chased a hen away from us. She peppered one in the body on Saturday and I was waiting for that good head shot and it just didn't happen. I never could locate those lonely toms. Any meadow that had any kind of green up that we found had lots of sign. Lots of birds out there just not real talkative.
