Area 33 Archery

Just joined in the forum tonight...Although I've been reading for quite some time.

Some really nice folks with some honest information and feedback.

 

I've been fortunate to draw 5 elk tags in the past 5 years (4 cow and 1 bull) and lucky enough to harvest 2 elk in the past 2 years, including a pope and young 5x6 bull last September.

 

 

This year I've dedicated some quality hunting time to area 33. Coming from Chandler I wanted to concentrate on access points from the Oracle side of Area 33. AZ G &F states the normal access points with some of the expected types of terrain.

 

With the Arizona Trail running through the Santa Catalinas, I was considering walking the trail, and hunting the ridges? Any ideas if that would be a viable strategy? Incorporating Glassing etc, with spot and stalk methods.

 

The trail starts off of the Mt. Lemmon control road, and the trail traverses near camp bonito, apache peak and continues on the Oracle Ridge to Dan Saddle.

 

Also is there any snow above 8000ft , I would image that Mt. Lemmon has received a minimal amount of snow.

Much of the Oracle Ridge Trail around the Rice Peak area is moon scape from the Fire, and that particular part of the trail is also a road.

The Reddington Pass area has been very productive over the past few years. Get high and get away from the roads. This is the standard for any place you go though. The further away from other hunters you get the better your chances become.

Ther are no deer in 33. Stay out of 33. Bad weather, wind, snow, burrrr!

If there are any deer in 33 I will let you know.

 

Ok Reddington Pass is a good idea. The whole unit is a good idea.

I suggest you try unit 34

Notice I did not give specifics in 33. The area is large with some nice honey holes in it. I hunted alot with a rifle with good success but still trying for that archery buck. Cannot wait for the January hunt.

Any suggestions for a meat processor down south? Also a taxidermy in Tucson ?

 

Yes, I agree the Archery buck is keeping me extremely motivated!

There ain't no snow on the North slope right now. You can drive to just below Rice Peak so don't go thinking you will be getting away from anyone by hiking up there. Alot of the country is burned but there are still deer there so who knows. Good luck.

I did call down there and they are a family run operation. (real nice folks)...
