coues addict Report post Posted December 8, 2005 Ultramag Well, I got lucky and drew a dec. tag. I am really starting to look forward to the hunt. I have not got to do any scouting and I probably won`t. I am pulling from past years and trying to penetrate some new country if possible. Now that Mace popped that huge toad I am really starting to think this is going to be a great antler year. I really am not all that hung up on racks though'' Yea Right!!!!". I just hope I have a fun hunt and the weather cooperates! I will probably only get to hunt the last 6 days after Christmas! In my opinion, thats the best part of the season. Good Luck all Dec. tag holders Coues Addict
Dan Report post Posted December 8, 2005 Got a 24-a Dec. tag ( 2 tags, me and my son). I took 2 weeks off to hunt. My son got a unit 1 cow elk Dec.16 also so hopefully a couple or three day elk hunt , then 10 or so day deer hunt. Been doing a lot of scouting (every week-end) but not seeing a lot of deer. Going to look at some different areas and maybe I can find the boy and me a couple of bucks
az4life Report post Posted December 8, 2005 2 scouting trips in 24b and spotted deer and good areas on both. Read on another thread that there are signs of an early start of the rut farther down south, so all I have to do is show up. RIGHT... I am not sure if I will have much time after opening weekend due to family issues so I am hoping to score on Friday -Tuesday of the first week.I would like the hunt to go according to plan. (Like Mace's) Maybe a day trip or 2 if I don't succeed opening weekend but those are iffy at best. Family issues have been many and challenging this year for me and now with the AGFD proposals I wonder if I will ever be drawn for this hunt again. Therfore, I am treating this hunt like it could be my last late coues hunt so the experience will be more important than the "score". Even so, I hope to take a nice buck with a quick shot. Taking a digi cam along for memories too! Counting the days, (Next week at this time I should be packing) and work really has been tough as it is a Busy time of year and everything seems to be blowing up so I am wearing the fire hat (putting out fires) a lot. It just makes the last few days before leaving very Long and difficult. Hope you other late taggers do as well, take some good bucks and save some great memories. Dreamin of a 130" buck G'night

rabidApache Report post Posted December 8, 2005 I got a San Carlos Archery tag. I did not tag out during the October tribal deer hunt. I hunted only one day due to work constraints. So this weekend I've got two tags to fill. The first tag is a Malay Elk tag and secondly my archery deer. My first priority is the Elk. Man I love this time of the year. You've got something to kill wether its deer, elk, ducks, predators and quail.

az4life Report post Posted December 11, 2005 I am sort of thinking of a CWT member "Eat and Greet" on saturday 12-17 after hunting at a restaurant in Globe. It Would probably be a reasonable distance if you are hunting in 24a or 24b. Who would be interested?

lfootmatt Report post Posted December 12, 2005 Scouted Saturday early. In before dawn, saw 3 bucks, a spike, 75-80" 3x3, and another we couldn't see very clearly. Lots of does and only 1 backpack of weed. Not a bad day in 36b. We were up in the NE portion of the unit so finding weed surprised us all. Burlap rig containing 2 bales of dope around 40 pounds each. 20 miles from the border on the I-19 side of the mountains. Hardly any trash, but we did spot alot of tracks that appeared to be UDA/smuggler tracks. Called BP with the location of the dope. shortly after dawn a BP agent and his dog tracked us down. We could hear him and his truck for a while before his dog led him right to us. He didn't find anything, or any one, else. He thought it either didn't fit on the load truck or the mule got scared and dropped it. Dog was pretty cool, got our scent and tracked right to us. Agent was very respectful, nice and thanked us for calling in the location. He wished us luck and took off. I guess there isn't as much trash that far north because they have already dropped everything by the time they get there. I'd debated taking my oldest boy(8), he is really ate up with hunting, that sealed that. Glad I had the .300 (for lions) and the Glock 22 in the drop leg holster felt a little lighter to hike with after that. Here is the problem. You're driving in at 0 dark 30 on a 1 lane track and drive up on them as they are loading the truck with dope. Not too happy to see you, possibly armed, most likely a bad situation! I'm thinking about writing a letter to respond to the 60 Min. segment on the border they ran tonight. It focused on how the tighter borders have backfired by forcing them into the harsh desert areas. How about my right to take my son(s) hunting that is being trampled on by thousands of UDAs and smugglers? I'd like to see a bit of consideration given to how it impacts us law abiding citizens. When people die doing something illegal, that they know is illegal, my level of sympathy is pretty low. Sucks that you live in a third world country, but that shouldnt interfere with my rights, yet it still does! I hope to get a nice buck, but just coming back unscathed will be a blessing as well. Good luck and be safe out there! Matt
