120carp Report post Posted June 7, 2011 hope everything works out for you guys that drew this tag! to me these are some of the best tags ever no matter what year it is. but the next time you draw these tags the under growth should have grown back by then. huntlines Report post Posted June 8, 2011 Well I heard the same thing about it being closed. If this is the case I hope they honor our tags for next year. I drew a unit 1 archery bull tag and would love to go next year. If you hear anything new please pass it along. I searched all over the net for any information and came up empty. Man to go from excited to totally depressed is an understatement. All from an idiot that left their camp fire burning.
huntlines Report post Posted June 8, 2011 Has anyone contacted game and fish and confirmed they are closing the unit? I heard some guys called and asked if they mailed their unit 1 tag back if they could get their bonus points back. They we told no of course but if they close the unit you would think they would allow the people with tags a new tag next year. No?????
bustedknuckleinc Report post Posted June 8, 2011 I read the regulations and it said that the department will not reinstate bonus points to people for permits that can't be used due to events that are out of the departments control. The only exceptions are for department errors or military deployments. If I remember right it was towards the front of the regs.
BML Report post Posted June 8, 2011 I hate to burst your bubble folks but the GFD is not going to do anything for you. This fire is obviously something that is totally out of their control. If they issue refunds or exchange tags for bonus points they will set the precedence for any issue in the future and they are not willing to do that.
120carp Report post Posted June 8, 2011 Hunt Permit, Bonus Points Disclaimer The issuance of any big game permit has no express or implied guarantee or warranty of hunter success. Any person holding a valid permit assumes the risk that circumstances beyond the control of the Arizona Game and Fish Department may prevent the permit holder from using the permit. In such situations, the Arizona Game and Fish Department disclaims any responsibility to reissue or replace a permit, to reinstate bonus points or to refund any fees, except under specific circumstances, such as activation of military or emergency personnel, as stated in R12-4-107(L). this sucks if they close it!! AZbowhntr Report post Posted June 8, 2011 But if they close the unit to hunting they are in control of that situation. The fire is outside their circumstances but closing the unit because of the fire is well within their control. It will be interesting to see what happens. DesertBull Report post Posted June 8, 2011 They didn't close unit 3 after the R/D fire did they?
missedagain Report post Posted June 8, 2011 They didn't close unit 3 after the R/D fire did they? I doubt the G&F is going to do anything but it is typical for the forest service to close off entry to the burned area for several years to protect the public from falling trees and illiminate excessive erosion due to public use. oz31p Report post Posted June 9, 2011 some of my favorite areas along the verde are still closed from the cave creek complex fire.
CouesFanatic Report post Posted June 9, 2011 Just because they don't legally have to do anything doesn't mean they won't. We all know what is the right thing to do here.
huntlines Report post Posted June 9, 2011 I actually hope you guys are right. I'm fine with not closing it if I have access to hunt. GF issued 40 more permits this year in unit 1 and if big portions of the unit are closed by the FS then it is going to be a really crapy hunt. With some good monsoon rain and access to the unit I believe the hunt wont be all that bad.....FINGERS CROSSED!
azoutlaw Report post Posted June 9, 2011 Whether its open or not it will be all burnt anyway. Good number of the elk will die. Total bummer as its imo the most beautiful country in AZ. Feel bad for all that drew the tag after waiting years for it. More than likely will be closed though. Sad
azrcks Report post Posted June 9, 2011 I know you are excited about the tag but as stated from Finch on the wallow.us sight as they are mopping up areas that have burned there are dead elk everywhere. One way to look at it is that the G&F quota has probably already been met or exceeded in both 1 and 27. I doubt very much there will be any hunting in here for a few years IMO. I shot a bull and turkey in 27 this last season and I feel that I did them a huge favor by sparing the enormous stress of this fire.
