Dec. 29/30A hunt

Recommended Posts

If any of you guys would like and accept any help with their hunt in 30A or 29, I would be more than happy to do so. I can show you some areas or even go with you and help glass or carry the MONSTER back. I usually have good luck for other guys.

Hey man where are you from. i love these areas but thats probably because they are the closest areas to my home. Even if i lived far away i couldn't quit loving them. I hunt them just about every weekend, well 30a anyway but i head towards 29 every once in a while. can't wait 'til January. Got a treestand set up in 29 and i know a lot of other good areas.

I live in Douglas. I have been hunting COUES for more than 20 yrs. in these areas. If I am not thinking about hunting COUES, I am asleep dreaming about hunting COUES. I only got in 1 day of hunting this year. My dad has a CHAMP and he was not feeling well. I will get some time out during the archery season though.

I have never had the patience to hunt out of a tree though. Later.

Creed and Reynaldo,

I too love to hunt these fine creatures and love both 29 and 30A. I will be back down in the Pedro's again after Christmas, camped in the same spot as I was during the Nov. rifle hunt. I will be archery hunting with a friend of mine and you guys are more than welcome to stop in and chew the fat. I drive an 04 f-250 super cap, white with a coueswhitetail.com sticker in the back window and my buddy drives a 93 chevy blazer, blue. We will be down there off and on starting the 20th and going through the end of Jan.

The Pedro's or actually the Pedregosa Mountains are at the south end of the Chiricahua Mountains just north of highway 80 and they run up to the Tex or Rucker Canyon road.

Yes the "Pedros". I like the Pedros. They are getting pretty congested now a days though - lots of people moving into that area around Casador and Castle Dome. My stomping grounds since childhood.

Reynaldo,

That was my 3rd choice this year but didn't draw anything. Thanks for your offer. 29 seems like a sleeper to me from what I have read. Maybe next year.-Shiras

29 is always a sleeper if you don't know where and how to hunt it. It's a lot thicker than most other areas and the hunting pressure is too much for the area in my eyes. The only time i really see any good bucks in this area is during the rut and the summer(usually around august). It seems that they have patterned the hunting season very well. Most people consider this unit a sleeper until they archery hunt it and see tons of big bucks all over. Reynaldo do you know much about that fire, how much has it burned and what canyons. Ilive in Double Adobe so the swiss elms block my view of the chiracahuas but not the smoke coming off of them.

According to the FS, they have burned 7500 acres. The fire boundaries have gotten into the upper ends of Turkey Creek, John Long and almost down to the old Rucker Lake area. Basically, if you have a topo, take Johnson Peak and draw a circle with a 3 mile radius from Johnson Peak.

It looked like the north edge flared back up, cuz I could see a good smoke plume in upper Turkey Creek again. FS says that the fire is 90-95% contained. Its been cold so it can't get too far, too fast.

I have been out for a few days - 2 deaths in the family. That fire is supposed to be 1600 acres according to the Douglas Dispatch. I have fought fire - my first was Yellowstone 1988 - that was crazy. I think it is more than 1600 acres. I think it started in the Pinery/Turkey Creek area but I saw the tops burning on the last day of the second deer season. It is still burning!

Thank you. But the truth is I JUST WANT TO GO HUNTING! No takers yet though.

29 is a great area. I see nice bucks there every year - getting them is a different story. I think it just takes patience to find them. I also think that the way we approach them is important. Sometimes we have to come at them from a different angle. I like the long way. I will come over the mountains and down into the canyons while the deer are watching other hunters comming up. It works for me. Of course the past few years have been difficult due to my fathers health - I have to be with him. Have you ever hunted the Swiss Helms? I have seen some MONSTERS hanging around the refuge there. Hunt the edge of the refuge.
