We need more deer tags!

Recommended Posts

I personally feel that we need the deer permits increased, especially doe tags! As I was driving thru unit 8 yesterday I saw a few doe out the window of my truck. A couple miles farther I saw a huge group of about 8 doe and 8 fawns. Well I tell ya those deer were eating like a group of recently freed POWs! There's no way the winter range handle all those deer! Now I see why they give out all the deer tags up in 12AW. Just imagine how many more deer there were back in the forest that I didn't see. You know, for the past several years it's been nice only seeing a couple of deer per year here in these northern units of AZ. The AZG&F sure has done a fantastic job of keeping the deer numbers down just in case we get a winter snow like they get up in Fargo North Dakota. I'd hate to see all those deer suffer from a severe winter die off. If anyone has a connection to the AZG&F Dept, please tell them that they need to increase the number of deer tags because there isn't enough cliffrose to eat.

Sincerely,

Joshua Eppinger

Josh,

Is your last name Eppinger or Epperson? You've got me confused now. Anyway, it sounds like we need to plant more cliffrose and maybe some get some G&F dollars to fund a few feilds of that magic clover they use back east ;) . I think those deer will be fine. They are pretty hearty. I even watched a desert muley munch on some creosote once. Snakeweed, juniper and sage has to be tastier than creosote. But if you really want to shoot a doe Josh, more power to ya ;) . I know, I know. You meant doe tags for the kids...I don't know though Josh, maybe you're right...I'm not a biologist.

JVS, you crack me up. My whole post was a complete farse and I'm thinking that is actually how some of the personell at the G&F look at things. In fact, have you ever noticed that when a huge buck or bull gets killed out of a unit, they take all the credit for it. Like they had something to do with the monstrosity of an animal. Anyway, I don't want to turn this into a G&F bashing thread like I usually would. I was simply having some fun. I thought with all the people that have looked at this thread would have made a comment or two. Hope some of you got what I was saying and got a laugh.

The Eppinger name I got from a taxidermist I use sometimes. For a few years he thought that was my last name. He even wrote it on the back of one of my mounts even though he had the tag with my name on it.

yeah, sorta like how somebody said they saw a condor around williams in the 20's so now we have em at the grand canyon. or how if elk or sheep show up someplace they automatically take precedence over the native animals. i think the azgfd does their surveys either by pickups on paved roads or rumor and hearsay. whichever is more accurate. funny how folks get a name messed up and keep doing it. like when in i was in school, several of the teachers thought my name was "sorry little b@$t@rd". the ones that are still alive still do! Lark

Lauging my tail off!

Josh

I got the point but could not tell for sure what was wrong with you. Seemed like you even forgot your name so I had to be sure you had not had been abducted by aliens or AGFD cronies.

Didn't want to offend you by asking. :)

The frog survey in another thread is still making me wonder bout agfd.

The Frog Surverys are true! They do the same thing in quite a few of the southern UNITS! Lark ur right the Dang surveys are done from trucks on PAVED ROADS!!! the condors and the wolves are the same deal! AND there is still even talk about letting grizzlies go in 27(Blue Wilderness Area) Thats where the bunny huggers come into play!!! They are gonna ruin our hunting more and more each year! The surveys they do on the Kaibab are the worst ever!!! they do them when all the Paunsagaunt deer are down there and all the snow is there!!! Those are not resident deer and do not represent real numbers! I wish they would take a look at Utah Division of wildlife's Deer Managment Plans.....Utah GMS even critisize and suggest that Arizona change their idea's behind deer hunting in AZ!!!

Mr. "Eppinger"

Before you made this post, I was figuring why we saw so many "monsters" in 36c back in Nov. This year, due to the rain and the increase in the number of yearling spikes born last year, there were 725 whitetail tags issued for the approximate 36 miles that the Babos stretch. That's about 20 hunters for every mile of range.

Last year there were 675 permits, and figuring the hunt success, there were 230 bucks taken. (I won't estimate the wounded and later dead that may have happened based on the barrages of multiple shots that were repeatedly heard, nor the natural mortality.) Spread out, there were then 6.4 bucks killed per mile of range last year. I have serious doubts about the longevity of quality coues in 36c. If you want a buck to survive 5 years to trophy status, but there are 30 bucks killed per mile in that time span, you can see the basis of my concern.

Sir Joshua, If you happen to be driving the back roads of unit 7 or 9, and happen to see two bucks, rejoice in the fact that you may have witnessed the last of the survivors.

RR, It's freakin crazy when you put it like that. Maybe you should bring that up in a commission meeting. Then again, they won't care either. They'll just humor you by listening and appearing to care.

Last year I saw 2 guys, on the late elk hunt, center punch a buck mule deer with the undercarriage of their penis truck by the Hat Ranch. I pulled over and said, "How does it feel to have killed one of the last remaining bucks in unit 8?" They got a laugh out of it but I was dead serious.

It's just sad. We truly are seeing the last of the deer as we know it. Get used to it I guess. Even if there weren't any deer left they'd still be issueing tags cause there'd be idiots who would still buy them and they know it.
