Personal Success

OK, I missed 3 times during my hunt shooting at 2 different deer (including a nice 90ish buck) and I know that it was my horrible shooting that let me down...no excuses!

But...this was probably the most rewarding hunt I have ever been on. I was able to hunt for 5 full days and at the end of the hunt I was more disappointed that the hunt was over than not shooting a deer. I was able to hunt with my dad, who had a heart attack in August. Sure we didn't get to climb all over the hills like we use to, but we saw bucks every day and I was able to teach him some things. I will never forget his reaction when he glassed up his first deer (after I had been watching them for 10 minutes).

I watched a fawn get lost on a hill and then find its mother and come running towards her, I could almost hear the fawn yelling "MOMMMY". It was fun to watch. We had a doe sneak up on us. The wind was at our backs and we heard the snort and turned to see a dust cloud at 10yds and a doe heading away from us. I saw javelinas making new javelinas. I know it sounds weird, but its seeing nature doing nature things. I saw a doe kick a barrel cactus trying to get the fruit off the top of it.

Sure we saw bucks everyday, including 8 on the last day, which was one of the ones I missed, but being out there and just watching was what it was all about for me this year. It was a really rewarding hunt.

Sorry for being long winded, but I thought I would share my experiences this year. Those little buggers better watch out come December though. I'll be out chasing them with my bow.

Thanks

I Enjoyed your post. Great news that your father is up and around so soon after that serious of a helath problem.

Keep talking, and taking your dad out whenever you can. Times like that are what hunting is all about!

We are all mortal and those good times will come to an end before we are ready for them to.

Peace. Out

Yes, these are the reasons why we hunt :P

I wish non-hunters could see and experience what God created for us to enjoy in the great outdoors ;)

Dodger2,

Sounds like a wonderful hunt to me. I'd trade the time in the field with my dad for a filled tag any day.

Get in some range time for those critters next year, but get that Bow tuned and your grunter ready for next month first!

Good luck in December. What unit are you going to? Are you taking your dad again?

Bret

dodger2 personal sucess is the what makes hunts more memorable. You describe your hunting trip as the trip of a lifetime. And no buck how ever big it is can add that feeling.time with dad is a wonderful thing its almost like being a kid again.I spent the weekend with my dad riding quads in unit 23 .We rode in some of the places that i go to all the time and he was excited to see some of that country. Its time very well spent. congrats :D

Your experience is what it's all about, killing a buck is a bonus. My dad shot a small fork horn as I sat next to him at 8:30 opening morning. Dad is 70 years old & still a heck of a shot. In 20 years that's what I'll remember.

i probably had one of the best years of hunting i have had this year.my dad and i hunted elk and deer together, neither one of us tagged an elk, i shot one but made a bad shot and didnt find her but we both tagged deer. this was the first deer he has killed in about 7 years. neither one of the deer were big by any means, but it was memorable because we got to spend a lot of time together and had a lot of fun. hopefully next year we can do the same!
