Leupold VX-III help with a decision

Recommended Posts

Thanks for all the input.

Doug, your idea of just dialing in the yardage is one I have been thinking of. Scott Adams mentioned to me that there are companies that sell dials that will replace your elevation adjustment and have markings on them so you can just dial in the range and shoot. No extra crosshairs to confuse the image in the scope. Your idea is even simpler (I think) where I don't replace the turrets with a custom dial with yardage, i just know how many clicks to go up for the given yardage.

Leupold will make custom elevation dials with yardage markers so you can dial in your leupold scope. I am thinking about going that route. You give them the load info and they get the right dial made. Anyone every done that?

I like the 50mm, 30mm, side-focus scopes. Once you've had the best, you'll never want to go back. I also use the custom elevation turret w/ the yardage marked on it for my bullet/velocity. Again, in my exper., the only way to go for longer ranges. Mark H.

I have 40 and 50 mm Leupold scopes! I can`t tell a bit of differance and the darn 50`s will definitely have to be mounted a lot higher. You are right on the money with your elevation dial from Leupold. They will make life much easier in a controlled situation like most Coues deer hunting. Won`t help much for jump shooting or quick shots. You should check out the DVD called Beyond Belief from long range productions. Its pretty awesome, they actually show a coyote getting shot at 1078 yards. Its really pretty cool. My buddy just bought the same scope L. R. with the adjustable side focus and it is awesome. I personally do not like multiple cross hair type reticles. It takes to much thinking and I like to keep it simple. I do like the idea of the elevation dial though! Just my 2 cents. Good Luck on your Dec. hunt.

P.S. We can hunt varmints at nite over here where I live!

I've got the Vari X-III also but in 6.5-20X40. I love it!! I sent my scope off to Premier Reticle (premierreticle.com) and had them put mil-dots in my scope for every 100 yards of drop with a zero of 200 yards, out to 800. Not that I'd use the 800 but for the extra few bucks it's more of a novelty than anything I guess. I think it cost around $160 to have it done. I had to send them the info for what load I'm shooting and they did the deal. Works sweet!!! A hunter of mine killed a bull at 440 yards this past Friday with my gun. He put the 2nd dot down from the crosshairs and hit him where it counts. It was awesome!! I love it cause there's no more guessing. Just range the animal, put the appropriate dot on him and if it doesn't hit where it should it's probably a shooter error. Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

Here's the bull and my gun. It's just an old Remington 700 30.06.

Amanda,

Have you (or anyone else for that matter) checked into the newer Kahles multi-zero scopes. I don't know much about them, but from what there adds say it is a similar system as the custom turrets you are considering. Maybe another option without the hassle of sending your scope off etc?

i have seen those Kahles advertised, seems pretty neat but the price tag is pretty high. i like the boone and crockett from Leupold, i have the varmint reticle on my 270wsm and it is nice but in low light it would be tough.
