Xman2000 Report post Posted February 17, 2011 Hi glassers I was wondering what peoples ideal set up for glassing is.What has made you successful finding game in the field or what you would think your ideal setup would be such as seating ,backpacks, brush or cleaners ,tripod, bino pouch ,head gear ,pan or ball heads ,bino holders, spotters and diascoping gear, video equipment and of course the glass it self .I know every one says buy what you can afford but even if money was no object to me there is definite over kill on big eye binoculars or even dual spotters mounted Its like people will be looking through hovel telescopes pretty soon! And I can't imaging having a ton of glass and equipment in my pack spending all that money worrying about dinging that glass and going after the game then having to pack my game and everything else back out. What I am trying to solve is what is the best set up to use in the field such as weight size and comfort.I have lately got the bug to look at the whole gamit of glassing and there are thousands of choices but I defiantly would love to find the best of both worlds meaning the best set up to consistently get the job done year after year .Pics of other peoples setup would be cool too just to be able to see what might Work for everyone else as well! my current set up is a thermarest self inflating seat this thing literally folds up in the palm of my hand badlands bino pouch I love it with the built in bow holder and magnets (no noise) holds my cap light ,bino brush, built in cleaning cloth and cleaning wipes my backpack is a black ridge pack witch holds my spotting scope and tripod and other gear pretty easy tripod is a vortex highlands tripod with the outdoors man bino holder ( just got this tripod so am on the fence about this till I get to glass up some pigs this weekend)It has a ball head and is very compact spotting scope is a Nikon 20x60x80 really clear but heat rays are annoying and binos are Nikon monarch atb 10x42 out fitted with outdoors man stud and bino shields Nikon 10 gig digital camera & jvc evro palm camcorder just got it for Christmas but has a surprising clear zoom hunting cap and bandanna over my head on really sunny days (And lord willing by next coues deer season a pair of vortex 15's kaibabs to go in my pack instead of the spotter)
azslim Report post Posted February 17, 2011 I like 8's around my neck, 15's on a tripod with a pistol grip and a good quality spotter for the few times I need to check something out. I have a cheap fleece blanket and/or old throw pillow to sit, I put a scarf over my head to block sun or wind. When you buy glass hold out for lifetime warranty grades, stuff happens. I need a different tripod, mine is not tall enough for me to stand and glass with.
Weston Report post Posted February 17, 2011 I use Zeiss 10x40's on slik 330 DX legs with a jim white head for 99% of my glassing, I typically dont carry any pad and also carry a vortex spotter (great glass, cheaper, and lighter than the swaro) I dont own any 15's yet, but swaro 15's would be my choice of 15's as leica and vortex kaibabs dont fit my face right, and I carry it all in my blacks creek 1.5 for small trips or Eberlestock Dragonfly for big trips or shed hunting. izquik72 Report post Posted February 17, 2011 Set of Carbon fiber legs 66" from eBay Manfrotto 700RC2 Panhead (handle trimmed) Kowa 8x32 for Archery or hang off my neck, Leica Duovids 10-15x50 for everything else, Currently have a Zeiss 20-60X80 Diascope (for sale) I mostly use it for spotting bullet holes when shooting. I use the Supplied Leica adapter I can use it for my rangefinder, Duovids, the Kowas, My spotter and even as a rifle rest. I am very happy with my setup and it works for what I do. Most of those Big eyes 25x or bigger are not for everybody But the Sheep guys and the Glassing fanatics I am sure would not trade there Huge glass for anything else. youngbuck Report post Posted February 17, 2011 Slik 714CF legs, bogen 301BN legs, 700rc2 heads, Swaro 15s either 10x Zenray ED2s or 10x leica geovids. Swaro 80mm spotter. I haul the extra tripod to shoot video, ,leave the spotter mounted up, or use to shoot off of, if we are in a bad spot. I usually have a webster with me too (general fit bino adapter) to glass close stuff with 10s. I usually have an extra tshirt to put over my head or a scarf. I dont haul a pad. I've got too much stuff to haul already, I'd probably lose it too. My archery camos all have the seat of the pants worn out from glassin in the rocks. I try to use britches that wont wear out when I'm glassin now.
